The wilder question to me is how are you 18 and not only recording yourself committing felony assault, but trying to recreate To Catch A Predator without even knowing what a predator is. How are 25 of you that dumb

as someone who attended and taught at catholic colleges, i can assure you that "luring 22 year old men to campuses to beat them for social media clout" is not in fact a specifically Catholic pastime lol. It's also a more general tik tok/youtube trend.
I mean even if he was doing something illegal, any force that wasn't reasonably necessary to stop him from committing a crime or restrain him until police arrive would be assault.
It a bit more short-term than the wayback machine. People find a paywalled, or ad-filled page they want to view and paset the URL in at the site and the site, pretending to be a search engine, gets the page, which comes without ads and no paywall.
I get it to work just fine, it's just spotty sometimes. Usually when I'm failing to connect if I keep trying for a few minutes it eventually starts working again. Only other thing I've noticed is that bizarrely enough sometimes just one snapshot of a page will never connect.
Seems a bit like the YouTube prank era where dumb people would post what they thought were pranks but they just recorded people reacting to traumatizing lies.
Exactly. No matter who they lured to campus, it's assault. It could have been Cosby or P Diddy, it's assault. She was legally old enough to meet up with whoever she wishes.
On reflection, ultimately I think this might not be a case of college kids thinking that a senior dating a freshman is an example of a Problematic Age Gap and inflicting mob violence as a response. I see two alternate explanations:
1. they saw tiktoks they didn't understand and just attempted to replicate them. the same way that people saw Point of View tiktoks and decided that "POV" didn't mean "POV," it meant "a person is in front of a camera doing a bit," they saw TCaP tiktoks and didn't understand it.
2. they wanted an excuse to hurt someone, and seeing those tiktoks, they thought this was a good excuse. Those people didn't go to jail, so maybe we won't go to jail, that sort of thing. Same desire to hurt people you see in those guys who shoot their ubereats deliveryguy
I once played a MMORPG with someone who was allegedly (He didn't claim it himself, but it's plausible and was whispered around) one of the people who ran TCaP, and he was very much like this.
He had a sense of right and wrong, but he also *needed* Acceptable Targets. (It was very "our asshole".)
Important context: 18 year olds are adults and typically have agency over their bodies and their decisions - if they choose to date/hookup with the olds, that’s most likely entirely acceptable and legal.
Sure, I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I was just clarifying that even the simple explanation-- that they thought Problematic Age Gaps = Pedophilia-- fails in this situation, because it was just another college aged guy
Except I've seen definitions of Problematic Age Gaps in use of under 6 months by people who did not have a concept of 'acceptable age gap increases as percentage it represents of each person's lifespan increases'.
I know someone who was once called a PEDOPHILE because he was 30 and his boyfriend was 22. Apparently, despite both being legal adults, an 8 year gap was supposedly predatory.
That's so reddit.
Any age gap, regardless of other circumstances, is super problematic and predatory.
I think the rule is something like 1/2 your age + 7 is the youngest you should date, but of course, there are exceptions
i regret to inform you that zoomers will be Like This even when the age gap is small; can someone dig up that AITA thread where a woman told her little sister she was banned from her wedding because she called her fiance a pedophile for being all of eight months older than her
Zoomers think someone attracted to someone 17 years and 364 days is a pedophile but the next day it's perfectly fine; not understanding we had to legally set the line somewhere.
I mean ffs they'll unironically talk about being "groomed" as a 20something.
The nerds have been sounding the alarm about this in fandom for like a decade. These people believe attraction to a 35 yo who’s 5’2” is pedophilia bc short ppl are “minor coded.” They genuinely believe ALL sexual expression is predatory & they will invent any reason they can to justify that belief
Tl;dr man buys DVDs in Venezuelan flea market, gets arrested in Puerto Rico on CP charges, pediatrician testifies that there is no way the girl could be an adult. Defense attorney looks up the website on the package, finds the starlet's contact info, gets her to show up and testify. Acquitted.
listen if you've even brushed up against fandom culture you'll have seen people making lengthy posts about how a 4 year age gap is totally unacceptable and pedo coded and and etc etc
to a large and weird GenZ subculture even a year gap is no good.
The fact it’s a Christian university is very relevant. These are kids that have been raised on the idea of spiritual warfare with no real enemy. So, they will just fabricate one with situations like this.
I don’t know the specific culture at assumption, but that kind of evangelical attitude isn’t universal at Catholic schools. You’d see it at Steubenville, not Georgetown, notre dame
yeah, that's why I mention Steubenville. If it wasn't so remote, I could see this happening at places like TAC too. Odd, but the "trad" schools tend to have a population that's more protestant in culture than anything else
I kinda doubt it. It's a catholic university, and those can have very wide ranges of religious fervor, from full on "opus dei" to "there's technically a church on the quad".
Eh, there are an amazing lot of people eager for a chance to Join a Mob and Chase Some Guy/ Storm Congress.
Remember the "killer clown" scare? A friend of mine walked a whole three blocks in a clown costume, was photographed, story got amped by local news... and people were planning to hunt him.
The punchline, of course that:
-It was October
-He was a well-known haunt character
-We routinely would walk the few blocks to the bar area to promote the haunt
-He had guest spotted on the local news station whose reporter was "DEMANDING ANSWERS!!!" from police and egging on the would-be mob.
Yeah, I think this has more explanatory power than "college kids think a senior dating a freshmen is problematic, worthy of mob violence." This feels like the same phenomenon as those guys that have been shooting ubereats drivers dropping off treats
I haven't been single in the age of Tinder. I would guess that it doesn't let you enter an age less than 18. If the woman dropped some hints about skipping a grade or graduating early, it's entirely possible he thought he was meeting someone underage. This doesn't excuse the lynch mob, though.
The lawyers will try and blame the TV show for the students actions. D.A. Novak gets the judge to reject that line of defence. Stabler lamps one of the students, nearly fucks the whole case.
I'm starting to think all those videos of people looking up people on sex offender registries, inviting them places under false pretenses, and beating them up on camera are bad for society.
The one time a christian school ends up in the news over a bunch of people opposing children being preyed on and they can't even figure out what a child is
I would maybe be slightly skeptical of this story right now. Looks like almost all the info in the article is from the cops, if I'm reading it right. It's a bit too perfect of a kids-these-days moral panic story. I'm gonna wait for more info before I draw conclusions.
I know/follow plenty of tiktok obsessed zoomers and unfortunately this is entirely plausible. Groupthink stupidity sadly doesn't only affect white boomers.
As a resident, I can witness that MA conservatives are the pure uncut Trump Drug Addicts: Freaks & losers

I hate this shit. I’ve seen videos of people knocking out “predators”, who are not charged with anything. There’s always a solid chance you’re going to be ruining a completely innocent person’s life.
I looked it up, and Assumption doesn't have very much of a core curriculum. They aren't getting much of a particularly "catholic" education beyond their intro to theology course, which crams a ton in a single semester, and does seem designed to open them up to non-Catholic ideas:
I'm not going to act like the catholic church has contributed nothing to the problem of these dumbass kids, but I think the bigger problem is societal, given that the vast majority of incidents of kids trying to recreate TCaP with violence on tiktok do not feature catholic college students
So this man in his 20s went to meet an 18 year old who said she was 18, and they battered him saying he was after underage girls??? Sorry, but you're not an 18 year old minor! You're legally an adult in fucking college!! Throw the book at these idiots and hope they learn something
they just wanted a video of them beating up a guy so they could get clout by saying it as a vigilante anti-pedophile beatdown, and it's a bit harder to find actual pedophiles, so

It keeps an extensive archive, but a finite one.

Mob violence and assault on the hand…

If McKeighlaw, 21, wants to bang Marcus McOldDude, an octagenerian, they're both legally able to.
And nobody has any business telling them their relationship is creepy.

I hate everything right now.

I can't wait to see the differences in the sentences.
