Germany’s election results are in. Not quite the far-right earthquake that was feared despite Putin and Trump’s best efforts, and a decent result for the Greens. A country divided though by age, gender, geography, and history. Likely Chancellor Merz’s work will difficult.

More info in this latest article, although to be clear what has been terminated is the IPCC Working Group 3 technical support unit and fed travel to next weeks’s meeting where the report chapter outlines are to be approved, after which authors will be solicited.

We saw the sun yesterday, but the rain has come back in force, apologizing profusely for its brief absence.

I don't believe in Hell, but if I did I would die happy knowing there was a special seating section for anyone currently railing against "the sin of empathy," and every one of those seats is made with hot rusty barbs

A somewhat depressing finding! But there is a fair-sized literature arguing that often the simpler models and heuristics are as good or better for decision-making. Just tricky to keep heuristics updated when ecosystem change is fast. 🧪🌍

Can anyone look at this graphic and say that we do not urgently need rewilding on a massive scale?

As it turns out the only immigrant coming for your job is Elon Musk.

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

My *hope* today (but pragmatic, so actually possible), as a Grüne voter (and member) is this: 5 parties get into the Bundestag (Linke get in) CDU-SPD get enough seats to form a coalition, and they do it Grüne and Linke play a role as a solid opposition

So let me get this straight. Trump and cronies are taking over Greenland because there are fossil resources to exploit under all that melting ice. They are taking over Ukraine areas with minerals for EV batteries. But their supporters actually believe them that climate change is a hoax and that […]

Spending $20M per year to protect a multibillion dollar fishery is obviously a wise investment - as is apparent to anyone whose intelligence has not been eroded by extremist political ideology. www.greatlakesnow.org/2025/02/trum...

What is the point of the BBC charter if whenever the requirement for truth and fairness is challenged by the biased far-right liars, it simply caves in

I'm begging people to remember that 'meritocracy' was coined for a work of satirical fiction. It is not a real thing, and, as the satire suggested, defining 'merit' as a standalone measurable individual quality is impossible.

“The UK didn’t have a general election for 10 years because of WW2 - that doesn’t make Winston Churchill a dictator. Zelensky has not banned opposition parties - just the ones openly pro-Russian, just like we banned the fascist party when Hitler was bombing the shit out of us on the nightly basis.”

A key lesson that America’s frontline partners quietly learned from how the US treated Ukraine after Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion is that relying on US weapons or tech that can cut-off, limited, or geofenced leaves you captive to “de-escalation” /1 www.reuters.com/business/us-...

Great reporting on @rteradio1.bsky.social 's Countrywide this morning on the very serious, long delays to many farmers' environmental scheme payments. If farmers are to have *any* faith in being paid for nature-friendly farming (or hopefully rewilding, in the future), this MUST be sorted, fast.

This is very, very bad. Am working on a write-up, but let’s just say that firing military leaders for blatantly political reasons is wildly inappropriate; firing all the too lawyers is ominous; firing them all at the same time is a terrifying five-alarm fire

Ohhhhhhh......yes! .....I think Musk fell in love with (became obsessed with) Thiel in college when he heard him speak. Hadn't heard of the Putin copycat window death....wow

I was at a punk show in 83 where a skinhead jumped up on stage and gave a Nazi salute. The bass player hit him with his bass, knocking him into the crowd and 150 people collectively hauled his ass out of the venue and threw him in the mud. This was the right and only appropriate response.

My dad was tortured by the Gestapo for 4 days and thrown in a concentration camp for being in the Norwegian Resistance. Growing up, he would tell me things he learned in the Resistance. I thought, I'm never going to need this stuff. Here's some of those things #Thread
