Hello BlueSky community 👋 You can now find us @natprodreports.rsc.org Join the Natural Product Reports conversation for high impact, critical reviews in natural products research and related areas #ChemSky #natprod

I am not going to call this a Bluetorial, because I do not want to sully that term (which, at least I, find joyful). Let’s call it a Orwellial.

one of the things scientists got wrong at the beginning of the pandemic is thinking "the coronavirus mutates slowly." my look back on what happened and why COVID ended up surprising us so much. www.theatlantic.com/health/archi...

Today is the day! AIR-BORNE is out. Thanks to the Associated Press for this review, calling the book "gripping"--"reads like a combination of detective and horror stories." 🧪https://apnews.com/article/book-review-airborne-zimmer-1adb7f2db55012be5f0d383d5908f3cc

NIH indirects case update: Hearing ongoing now, and I'll try to live tweet some notable exchanges. Prior to more detailed arguments, Judge Kelley starts off with a few point questions to both sides: (I'm paraphrasing here)

Here are some data documenting the funding "pause" pulled from NIH Reporter. Current results (FY25) (Red) are compared with results from FY21 (first year of Biden Administration) and FY24. Note that data from Reporter lag behind release of NoAs by ~1 week. I will be tracking this going forward.

On January 6th, 1995, my (now ex) wife and I boarded a flight from Heathrow to JFK on a one way ticket. We had two suitcases and about $900 in cash - this was everything we owned and we were moving to the US. We thought it was maybe for 2-3 years. I had visited the US once, for a conference, and

I cannot find out if the @buffalonews.com has reported on this yet as they have been experiencing technical problems that impact the online version. However, I can say that NIH Reporter lists $191M in NIH funding comes to the NY26 district. That seems newsworthy.

The Senate HELP Committee has jurisdiction over NIH. GOP members of the committee represent AK, AL, IN, FL, KS, KY, LA, ME, MO, OH, and SC. Research universities and hospitals in those states need to be extra loud.

I didn’t know if it might help to actually see what we are talking about with indirect costs so I did a little lab tour. youtube.com/shorts/ttia4...

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.” University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.

The total research expenditure of Penn State was $1.4b last year. Much of that was federal money that came into the state -- paid wages and state income taxes, rents, property taxes, sales taxes. State representatives might want to consider what freezing federal funds does to their constituents.

A very worthwhile thread.

Bluetorial: Light and Life: The incredible life of Lubert Stryer I described my involvement with Lubert Stryer and how it led to one of the great opportunities of my life, taking over his textbook. Today, I detail his truly incredible life story.

Are you working on natural products? We’ve just released version 4.0 of the MIBiG data standard and repository! It now includes 3059 biosynthetic gene clusters, thanks to the combined efforts of 288 expert contributors. A thread: (1/8) academic.oup.com/nar/advance-...

Alright, I have taken the plunge to see what this site has to offer. I look forward to reconnecting with the enzymology, structural biology, and natural product communities here.
