How does the “mental load” of taking care of family and household influence decisions about participating in public life? In a new @bjpols.bsky.social paper w @annanhelgoy.bsky.social we use a survey experiment priming domestic mental load to find out. doi.org/10.1017/S000... 🧵 1/9

May the angels of the peer review process be with us 🧚‍♀️ 💫

New paper out @wepsocial.bsky.social with @karinakosped.bsky.social &S. Scarrow Based on the 🇩🇰 case we show that (1) parties’ social media following is a sizeable form of political engagement & (2) social media partisans form a distinct type of party affiliation www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

I know the world feels overwhelming right now, but I happen to have a new website... www.sofiaammassari.com ...and I'd be *very* grateful if you could take a look and share it widely! And, of course, if anything catches your eye, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d love to hear from you! 🙂

Our article "Young radicals, moderates and aligned: Ideological congruence and incongruence in party youth wings" was published in European Journal of Political Research a few days ago. [A bit of a thread 🧵 about this article's long journey & findings] ejpr.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

How does a Trump victory (or loss) impact attitudes abroad? There are a bunch of papers that have asked this question over the last eight years. 🧵 The 2016 election lead to an immediate negative effect on public opinion towards the US. (www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10....)

PUBLISHED! Forget talk of a coup or self-coup, Musk's siege of America's vast federal bureaucracy is a form of state capture. It fits seamlessly with Trump's authoritarianism. I suspect this will be the most important thing I ever say about American politics. theconversation.com/is-elon-musk...

This is the one article to read on contemporary (and future) U.S. politics. Laid out analytically and clearly. There is a hint of optimism (which I do not share but do appreciate).

Another score for the YOUMEM project! 🎉 If you're interested in the ideological alignment between party youth wings & their members, this thread by @duncanmcdonnell.bsky.social has got you covered (featuring also some thoughts on the challenges of publishing membership research in top journals)

"Far-right populists much more likely than the left to spread fake news – study" Massive study covering 32m tweets from 8,000+ MPs across Europe points to the inescapable conclusion that the Far Right lie the most. (All other parties are very broadly on par.) www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

{tinyplot} 0.3.0 is out! 🚨 It's a lightweight #Rstats 📦 to draw beautiful and complex plots, using an ultra-simple and concise syntax. This is a massive release! @gmcd.bsky.social @zeileis.org and I worked hard to add tons of new themes and plot types. Check it out! grantmcdermott.com/tinyplot/

My @polstudies.bsky.social article on stigma & grassroots activism in populist radical right (PRR) parties has now page numbers! journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.... Drawing on the 1st ever comparative survey of PRR party members, I ask how stigma affects their participation in party activities.

Gen-Z Turnout in a Compulsory System: ‪@ammassarisofia.bsky.social‬, Ferran Martinez i Coma & @duncanmcdonnell.bsky.social examine what drives Gen-Z electoral behaviour by surveying them about their '22 AU federal election choices. Read OPEN ACCESS: https://buff.ly/3CAvTvp @uoypolitics.bsky.social

Great to see our article on Gen-Z turnout in Australia covered by The Australian. Here is the link to the piece: www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/almos....

Accurate for Australian VCs too

“The Maha Kumbh Mela, a Hindu festival in India that is drawing hundreds of millions of pilgrims, is a powerful marketing tool for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his allies.” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/02/w...

I have a new article in @electoralstudies.bsky.social 🎉 It uses conjoint experiment in the UK to test how important the culture war (statues, LGBT+ representation in pop culture, DEI, transwomen athletes, curriculum diversity, and university free speech) is to voters Link👇 & results 🧵

Justice has been made. Thank you, Queen. 💘

The tariffs are mad; but what’s equally mad is that they somehow come as a surprise, when Trump has campaigned non-stop on this and controls all branches of government Precious time has been lost, but it’s not too late for countries to mount an effective response 1/x

On this note, here is a thread with recent research on what normalization is and how it happens. It includes links to references, from my work and that of others. I tried to tag the authors whenever they are on here, in case you are interested in following their work. 1/8

Seems like a good day to reshare this recent study that shows how mainstream parties can fuel the success of the radical right by opening the door to them

Our article on Gen-Z turnout in Australia (w/ Ferran Martinez i Coma & @duncanmcdonnell.bsky.social) is now out (open access) in Political Studies 🎉 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... A quick thread 🧵:

Part of the reason that Gen Z are less enamoured with democratic norms is surely that they feel like they are getting a pretty poor deal out of the status quo. Our polling found Gen Z were the most likely generation to report feeling stressed, sad, lonely or angry every day.

Now with page numbers! Don't miss @rosieshorrocks.bsky.social 's excellent book on gender differences in political attitudes and how they influence party voting in Western democracies.

A big development in India. The Uttarakhand state government introduces common regulations for marriage, divorce, inheritance, etc. Up to this point, religious authorities have set its own rules. Extending this new regime across India will be controversial. www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/u...
