Defend the liberty of a stranger as you would defend your own, or that of a loved one, because that is what's actually on the table—whether we are a society that will sit still as our neighbors are snatched in the night, and disappeared into darkness, or a society that will fight for each other.

The fact that anyone could continue to teach, the idea that this is "as usual" is such a betrayal to their students, to themselves, to the nation. It's completely unconscionable.

This is why I'm skeptical of any examination of "male loneliness" that doesn't put profit pressures and hustle culture at the root of the problem.

This is really good

Big and dangerous news. Two thoughts: 1) this funding can’t legally be revoked without a formal administrative hearing and judicial review. 42 USC sec. 2000d-1, 2. 2) going after Columbia first, which has been quite aggressive in cracking down on protests, sends a message that no university is safe.

Big "Yes / YES / THE TIGER IS OUT" energy right here.

a very key point is that Trumpism makes his voters *worse people* on a personal level too. it demands performative cruelty.

This could be us but etc. etc.

my fellow Californians of good moral character… trans people need you, *i* need you, to tell Newsom exactly what you think of him saying trans Californians (in a trans! sanctuary! state!) aren’t worth protecting PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS SLIDE

I hope science colleagues asking us to stand up for their research will see that the same solidarity is required for arts, humanities and social science research. If any of us are disposable, we all are eventually.

Oh hey #BSBookClub 🐋 crew, did we already know about this playlist? (Apologies if one of you posted and/or created this ages ago!)

40-day #TargetBoycott starting today I like to believe about myself that, had I been around for the Montgomery Bus Boycott, I would've both boycotted & helped the Black organizers in any way they asked. I can't know. I do know, though, that I am around now. I can surely boycott Target for 40 days.

Apropos of a lot of things: I keep thinking about how in 2017 we found out that a lot of Confederate statues are actually hollow on the inside and it's surprisingly easy to pull them down. The visual of this one in Durham, NC, crumpled to the ground, has stayed with me for years.

I need the institution where I teach (NYU) to respond clearly and unequivocally saying this is unconstitutional and they will not be adhering to it. This is a red line.

If you’re a professor in a classroom today & you don’t mention this, I believe you’re doing your students a profound disservice. This is targeted 1st at international students, but it’s deliberately broad enough to lay groundwork for a scene Trump & Hegseth have fantasized: troops on campus.

Some figures on the potential death toll from Musk's pointless destruction of USAID, from a memo written by a fired official. He will be remembered as one of the great monsters of history. 1/x

I’m so thankful that SHARP issued this statement about the annual conference in July; and I’m so deeply disgusted and enraged that it was necessary to do so.

It’s a beautiful day for a protest. #TeslaTakedown

The U.S. government has put up a submission form for reporting schools who teach kids about “DEI.” It accepts file uploads. Internet, you know what to do enddei.ed.gov

Re: concerns (good faith or bad!) that #EconomicBoycott, a single, 24-hr action, won't do "anything," pls understand: 1.No single action stands alone; they add up—but only if they happen 2.It's a start; if it works, it'll go bigger 3.Ppl who take one action? Generally keep going. It. All. Matters.

If "60 hours a week is the sweet spot of productivity," that's only because the tech workers who can put in all those hours at the office have offloaded all their caregiving responsibilities onto others more vulnerable than them. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/27/t...

Psyched about some exciting upcoming international travel in a few months, but at the back of my head I keep wondering: Will my American accent get me shunned? Will we be in another pandemic situation thanks to RFK Jr. and his antivax lunacy? Will it even be safe to fly on a plane?

Thread. And in case my fellow white people need it to be more explicit: you are facing a fraction of the fear and uncertainty that the Black community has faced in the US for centuries, and it is turning some of you into your ugliest selves.

Everybody needs to see this beastie peeping through a hole in Isidore. #medievalsky

This! If you can switch from Whole Foods to a different grocery store and buy your books from bookshop.org instead of Amazon, that’s still a big step even if you feel tied to Amazon for other items. If everyone divested 30% that’s more than if a few people divest 100%.

This is a full purge of every single LGBTQ employee at the NSA. Rufo is falsely mischaracterizing a LGBTQ employee resource group as a "sex chat" to create pretext to fire every single member in it. This is a playbook they will run to purge the entire federal government.

You first.

Last night's piano lesson involved me getting frustrated with my lack of hand coordination on a tricky passage. We ended up working on literally half a measure of it over and over, very slowly, until it started to come together. I feel like this is metaphor for living in these times.

In every academic leadership position, people must ask themselves: who do I serve? The people above me or below me? #academicsky

That should be the populist left line. People hate billionaires and railing against them is immensely popular.

Dear manager: 1) wore the bottoms of my trousers rolled 2) parted my hair behind 3) dared to eat a peach 4) heard the mermaids singing each to each 5) do not think that they will sing to me

Dear manager: 1) went home with the waitress 2) the way I always do 3) how was I to know she was with the Russians too? 4) gambled in Havana 5) took a little risk

Yeah, this is the one

Several good things are happening according r/fednews so I am going to drop them here. If federal workers are fighting back, how much more us? A thread/
