Your initial points track 100% with my personal experience. On state guards--I've read that they are recently under more federal control in practice at least? Context-MD nat. guard canceling a black history month engagement. How would the state/federal balance play out with something more serious?

NYT put a good headline on it at least.

Thank you for this. I read a 2014 WaPo article about this last night but it's good to see an update.

Won't that make rural mail delivery way more expensive and difficult?

I put off reading Emma for years--wanted to have something unread by austen to looke forward to.
Now I reread her every 5 years or so and it's always a delight!

Can I return mine and get my national parks taken care of instead? Or maybe a guarantee on clean air?

Yeah this feels like a no-brainer in terms of messaging. In my experience many of the less specialized civil service openings wind up being filled by veterans. The more specialized jobs are filled based on the skills profile of the candidate, who may or may not be a veteran.

Oh my gosh these people did not pay attention in history class. Or maybe they paid attention to the wrong things?

I'm a librarian, trying to focus my energy on fighting censorship amd tracking the loss of government data. Who should I be paying attention to right now? And what organizations do you like that do this kind of work?

You've been in different corners of the internet than usual, reporting on NIH and scientific research/funding structures. Possibly tweaked your algorithm.
But the silence of scientific and academic leadership right now is pretty glaring, so who knows what their current strategy is?

The surrealism resonates with me better than when they try to normalize this.

I have grandparents and a lot of family from Reading. The city's poverty rate is one of the highest in the country. How do we build a coalition that includes these voices and concerns in a meaningful way?

You need to read the transcript to see what happened. MAGA generating propaganda and being disingenuous.

The OP is a law professor and a former US attorney, so I'm guessing this is based on some kind of personal knowledge. It's terrifying and I'd feel a lot better with more information for sure.

Layoffs for DC-area friends and family. My job as a librarian has been affected by the deletion of vital government data and statistics. And my sister is a middle school health teacher--info they use from federal government for teaching health has disappeared. More to come, I'm sure.

That feels like stupidity, not a constitutional violation. The imprisonments at Guantanamo though? Maybe the military should be refusing orders there? I don't know enough to say.

You're suggesting that a military coup by a subset of US forces is a good idea right now? I'd disagree.

They are not supposed to publicly voice dissent. But if they are given an order that violates the constitution, it is their duty to refuse to comply.

Spouse to a retired military member here. There is a diversity of political viewpoints in the military for sure. But we are fiercely patriotic and willing to take action to defend our democracy. This doesn't surprise me at all.
