I don't know why we should trust a game critics opinion on a Visual Novel. Even IF they give it a fair chance, and the review ends up being positive: I don't see any more value to that opinion than any user review, when reviewing writing simply isn't that person's area of expertise at all.

My eternal hot take is, that the issue isn't with game critics not respecting Visual Novels - it's more so that they shouldn't be reviewing VNs in the first place.
I wouldn't trust a movie critic to review an album, a music critic to review a painting or an art critic to review a novel.

Recommend going for C/D to people who are completionists anyway and already loved the game up to this point. Sure ending D is cool, but nothing you NEED to see for the story to hit.
Now it feels like C/D are what you need to get through before the game gets "good again".
