yeah, just had a 40ft something tree (bad at trees) blow over and completely obliterate my daughter's garden she's been growing from seeds since February >_< Missed neighbor's shed by 2ft and ours by 4ft, no one hurt but rough when she (3) asks to check on her cucumber and sunflower..

That is odd. I can think of maybe 1-2 times of 20+ outages where someone hit a pole/infrastructure that took down power + the ISP backhaul I noticed AT&T Fiber marketing advertising the inclusion of 5G failover which is a fantastic benefit to customers; I use a GoogleFi tablet SIM for failover

Typically for us power loss doesn't equal hardline internet loss, just need to keep the modem/gateway/APs up via UPS or one of these recently popular large capacity power banks (ecoflow, jackery, etc) Keeping a few things up for 60-90m is much cheaper w/ standard <=150USD UPS; 6hrs+ gets up near 1k

basic FRS/MURS education isn't a bad idea either, since it involves no licensing gives you options with removable antennae. GRMS is even better (up to 50w) but it's a ~35$ 10yr family license that some don't want to pay for. For GRMS, best to use a P.O. Box for the registration, public database.

Getting a bit into LiPo and LiFePO4 battery packs isn't a bad idea to add to the list. More and more dependence on packs where one or two cells go bad. I've recently gone through finding a good spot welder that I plan to run off a SLA 12v rather than complex PSU/Capacitor arrays.

👍 That makes sense I wish the ACLU website was more clear and mentioned/linked to property search somewhere on that page

Wasn't the border patrol map going around showing 'within 100 miles' of any border, including coasts? It wasn't being dismissed the way I would expect it to be if false... I remember being surprised by it reaching almost halfway into Ohio

I have missed (and appreciated) the conversations/perspectively. So much is just noise, especially now..

nice! I just purged like 10-15 podcast subscriptions a few weeks ago and left Phileas Club, just in case :p

Yeah, only a few things I prefer about Mastodon and this one of them. Setting your instance to no character limit is great when the content isn't jokes and memes, and especially when it involves links. Showing a few hundred chars + 'see more' is the correctly balanced UX.

This right here. Option on the right -- If you're at the top or elsewhere, current icon; soon as you start scrolling the icon changes to ^

I've been consistently unhappy with their update/patch documentation & rollouts. I will likely go the route of a 4U case and old components next time around, waiting for several weeks for urgent CVEs to be addressed is not really acceptable. GUI is also pretty limited, too often I have to ssh in.

The assumption is that investigators have information that is not released to the press/public. They only release information to the public if it can benefit the investigation, which given the sentiment surrounding this, could have the opposite effect.

even better, there's classification of regular or long post and instances (like my personal instance setup for learning) can set huge character limits with only the first bit shown + 'expand for more' type UX

Yeah from a product design perspective there's a simplicity to it that should be celebrated which gets canceled out by the fragility (poor QC?) of USB flash drives. I don't have the data to back it up but I've had the thought that a resilient ('surveillance rated') microSD might have fared better.
comment in response to post
Exactly, I don't really fault them for this.. beyond sourcing the poor reliability flash storage

Bambu X1C and PRUSA's Core One are no brainers, if your budget is there. If you're just looking to try/test, either play with printers in many public libraries or go with a Bambu A1

I mean, Ubiquiti just had a USB drive plugged in inside the case. They started to fail in large number so they had to instruct people to flash the firmware onto a new USB drive and swap it out...

p.s. not interested in any extensions there seems to be a real concerted effort to push people to a particular extension when a handful of personal projects/websites existed and worked quite well since BlueSky went live.

Obviously this could be a subdomain itself to avoid establishing trust for a new URL, like *.fmr.house.gov; but that URL starts to feel clunky so it's a tradeoff.
comment in response to post
For private sector I think the subdomain is de-linked, as you said. For government, I think there is a need for 'not actively serving' TLD that public servants are transitioned to. For instance if we're talking about *.house.gov, there would be a *.fmrhouse.gov; similar to former president.

Senior year of undergrad a friend gave me an adderall. Never-taken-nonprescribed-drug me took it 6hrs prior to a normal importance exam. Got really sad and wrote a couple of really long, really sad emails and didn't study after the 1st hour. I probably have ADHD but in the US so we'll never know.

> No clue how long Gorhill will be able to update via the Chrome Web Store, hopefully until June 2025 > No good guidance what to do beyond June 2025; uBO Lite is available with several sacrifices to comply w/ MV3 > Updating outside of Chrome's Web Store is possible, may be viable path

+1 for the Lamy Safari I don't really care about fountain pens but wanted an ink that was forgery resistant (bleaching, UV, etc). Found Noodler's Ink: Bad Black Moccasin which is all that PLUS forensically verifiable, which necessitated a fountain pen. It is excellent, went with extra fine nib.
