This is true, I feel extremely unprofessional compared to some of my peers…. And I’ve been doing this full time for over a decade now lol

I genuinely believe self publishing in a big and popular genre is the only realistic way to make a full time living with only writing. So for me, it’s going great—because I write romance novels and romances are hugely popular. Promo is important, but learnable.

For me tiktok is the intro to reading culture. People that get into reading via TT don’t stop reading just because they ran out of the trendy stuff. Ideally those people filter into other fandoms and platforms…

I think this is common in trad pub where the timelines are super long. But there are authors who publish more frequently for sure. I gotta imagine you either have a bestseller or you’re making an income with work outside writing at a 1book/yr pace for a while. Slow but steady!

That’s a great way to think about it lol. Built in deadlines and motivation! Tbh those writing routines/habits are probably one of the most important things you’ll get out of it

I’m the same way— short stories aren’t really my best form but they’re fun and keep me engaged

Honestly same, but I’m at the point where it’ll take me a year to get through 1300 pages

Also I used “story shape” on purpose. Novel forms and genre conventions are only as restrictive as the writer wants them to be. Constraint makes good art, even when it’s filthy genre art.

This is what people mean when they say “write to market.” Figure out what readers are interested in reading and give that to them. It’s not some sell-out scammy mindset, it’s just about writing story shapes readers are looking for.
