I always like that it spawned a children’s science programme called Serendipity Dog. But nothing to do with nominative determinism I’m afraid…

Now you've worried me. I read your beautiful email post, and went to the Substack to comment, but others had already said what I wanted, but more eloquently, so I thought "Oh fuck that, I'm off". So I might be on your 'most callous, uncaring bastard' list despite my tears this morning.

Even when the story is about Leanne Wood's demolition of the far right frog-face, they illustrate it with a picture of the frog-faced far rightist.

If you have to introduce her by the men in her life, couldn't you have gone with "Charles Wheeler's daughter has urged Keir Starmer…"? It's much more palatable. Or simply, and this is novel, "Marina Wheeler has urged Keir Starmer…"

But they'll do it by quietly moving on to hate another group. They've done 'benefit scroungers', paedophiles (which went wrong when they discovered their readership didn't know the difference between a paedophile and a paediatrician), and muslims/foreigners, so they'll peddle hatred somewhere.

I think I’ll run every one of your jokes through the ‘done before’ filter, so that I can feel good and smug, without all that tedious laughing.

At the grand opening at the Fondation Louis Vuitton! Was there today too for a special preview. It’s amazing!

That’s really interesting - thanks. But also, I’ve never heard the word Denisovans spoken before, so was never sure of its pronunciation. Thanks for that too! *scrubs out DeniSOWvans and DenisoVANS*

I'm near Tenbury Wells, and so I use Frank P Matthews. I've always found them excellent.

They used the "there's no money left" note for 14 years, so I guess RR has some time to run yet

My 25 year old granddaughter has a job in Milan, involving no end of extra paperwork, hoping for the best, fear of crossing borders in case something wasn't ticked correctly. She didn't get a vote and is furious with my generation (quite rightly, but I have to explain that I am also furious).

Similarly, I usually write up my day in my dairy. Which is appropriate, as it's mostly cheesy.

No - nothing. Can you give us a clue? Not now, maybe Later?

But loses of £3.8 million on turnover of £6million is not encouraging. Maybe they'll be helped by buying the venerable, and much loved Observer from a company that was running it perfectly well, but decided to gift the buyer £5 million.

I do! My father worked near Holborn and he considered Gamages his personal shop. He delighted at giving a cheery wave to the baffled staff when he took us there.

Roomes! Blimey - I haven't heard that name since I was last there. In about 1965. Great to hear it's still going strong - the department store in Romford market that we were also taken to became a Debenhams, and has probably gone now. I should get on the Elizabeth Line and go and have a look.

My proper disgust goes to the posh bankers who bought posh Notting Hill houses and then complained about the carnival.

The ISS Locator app is pretty good - it also has Hubble and others, and gives the time, magnitude and coordinates. I’m sure there are others though.

There was an ISS pass then - a good bright one too (although I missed it again). There's another at about 6:20 this evening - so not long now. I'm having to rely on a phone app - where's @virtualastro.bsky.social when we need him?

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?
A male bee doesn’t have a father and can’t have sons, but it does have a grandfather, and can have grandsons.

James Rebanks posted a beautiful picture of his farm a while ago. I thought then that apart from the shape a colour of the bovines, it could have been an ancient Pleistocene landscape. (It was over there, so I can’t link.)
