A Florida high school teacher has been fired for using a student's chosen name instead of their deadname, a first under a 2023 law signed by Ron DeSantis. “She is a beloved teacher that changed her students’ lives” said one parent leading a petition with 7,400 signatures demanding her reinstatement

President signs Exec Order to raise temperatures and sea levels, burn down homes, raise the price of food, make insurance unaffordable, make Earth unlivable. Oh, and poison your kid’s tuna fish sandwiches with mercury. #climatecrisis

Author Charles Hecker joined @marketplace.org y'day to talk about economic ties--real & desired--between Russia & the U.S. (as well as his new book ZERO SUM: The Arc of International Business in Russia) www.marketplace.org/story/2025/0...

They’re going to keep pushing until something stops them.

Felony charge for loving your child and being a responsible caretaker who wants your child to live... everyone involved in this should be shamed off the planet

The discourse around tariffs has been “things will get more expensive” but I am here to tell you that I am knee deep in reporting on this subject and I strongly suspect that if super high tariffs endure, it will shift to *certain items cease to be available at any price*

It has been two weeks since a Georgia woman was arrested for her miscarriage, and not one major national outlet has covered the story

🚨 Librarians: for a time-sensitive story, I'd love to speak to you about your current work conditions, the Trump admin's impact, and what you're seeing on the ground. Shares appreciated. Email [email protected] or Signal rstauff.20

Since many of us basically write emails for a living now, here's a primer on how to write a cold email to ask for something you want. When you're promoting a book, you might do this A LOT.

It's not just the biggest peacetime tax increase in US history. It's also the most regressive tax increase in US history.

Ironically, considering things on the national level, it's Library Giving Day today. If you can afford to send a donation to your local or favorite public library, they could use it now more than ever. They are one of our best public resources. 😍

Just making you all aware of my local indie bookstore, which you should be following on here for delightful book content (and more--seriously, try the peanut butter cookies): @katonahreadingroom.bsky.social

beyond disturbing. pay attention people.

If you are an American conservative, there is nothing anyone can say or think about you that can possibly be worse than what you actually are.

not great: www.nytimes.com/2025/03/10/b...

Bravo to author Charles Hecker, whose book ZERO SUM (out today from @oxfordunipress.bsky.social) gets a great review in the @nytimes.com! This timely book shows what happened the last time Capitalism went to Russia--& how it all fell apart www.nytimes.com/2025/03/04/b...

The October '25 book I'm working on abt how the ultra wealthy avoid paying any taxes AT ALL has a whole section explaining how the U.S. used to finance everything w/ tariffs...& why that was abolished due to fear of literal class warfare. Anyway, thought that was interesting.

The section I edit has been cut from three Sunday pages to two. It’s incredibly sad. If folks want to support our coverage, please subscribe, read & comment on our reviews. This is true for any journalism you want to support. Digital engagement is super important.

The work of @joshcowenmsu.bsky.social is key to understanding the voucher issue:

Smart (no surprise there!) interview w/ superstar book publicist @wpeeling.bsky.social on what authors should think about when thinking about hiring a freelancer:

Next, they'll claim that all of this (Trump's "LONG LIVE THE KING!" post and its echoing) is a joke, a transparent trick they use repeatedly. As w/ Musk’s Nazi salute, they'll pretend for out-group audiences to be kidding or misunderstood, while the in-group recognizes that they are deadly serious.

Gov. Hochul's office is answering the phones now, and taking down opinions--don't hesitate to share yours on saving congestion pricing (& throwing out Mayor Adams while we're at it!)

I now have a litany

Except he’s threatening states with school funding loss if they don’t comply with federal rule changes, and backing a federal tax shelter voucher scheme that would force vouchers into states that don’t want them. fox11online.com/news/nation-...

My city doing the right thing. Are you out there fighting for yours to do the same?

We have to do this differently this time around, and one of the ways I hope that we do that is by collectively understanding that people can care about two things at once (or even, gasp, MORE than two things) especially while people are out there banning books: TALK ABOUT BOOKS!

Here is the pre-RFK vaccination schedule for your kids. Please download it before he is confirmed and changes/deletes it. Give it to your pediatrician and say this is the schedule you want your kids on. Making this my pinned post.

i'm the person who types "thanks!" to the AI chatbot helper online. sigh.

Great feature on @joan-c-williams.bsky.social in @us.theguardian.com abt her book (out May 20 @stmartinspress.bsky.social ) "OUTCLASSED: How the Left Lost the Working Class--and How to Win Them Back." TLDR; the Dems are doing it wrong, here's how to fix it www.theguardian.com/books/2025/f...

Boggles my mind that FETTERMAN has said he's voting against RFK Jr. while GILLIBRAND hasn't. Please consider calling Gillibrand today about this if you have a minute, fellow New Yorkers. www.gillibrand.senate.gov/contact/

Can't hurt:

I'd signed out months ago but finally deactivated my tw****r account and it feels SO GOOD

so, are we just going to watch all this happen, then? honest question. phone calls don't really feel sufficient given **gestures around**

Just re-upping for media covering #school #vouchers and #Trump : you must talk to @joshcowenmsu.bsky.social, author of THE PRIVATEERS (out fall 2024). He knows everything about how they became "a thing" & why the Right desperately wants them to become the norm...

Fully in support of authors & editors not having to spend time & energy pursuing the blurbs media continually tell us they don't care about & don't need or want: www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

WIC. They are pausing WIC. That's the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Last time I checked (a while ago), every dollar spent on WIC produced over a dollar in savings *in the same fiscal year.* For most people, though, feeding infants and mothers is enough.

This isn't good for anyone

Just doom-posting is so unhelpful to everyone (and yourself!). Go help the people close to you. I joined my city's Human Rights Commission and set up some reoccurring donations to a few places to start. Find something that works for you!

BroadsidePR's Advice for Authors: A Survival Kit for Dark Times is a little dusty since we first published it NINE years ago on @literaryhub.bsky.social, but we hope still useful.

NEW: what a week, right Lemon? We cover the NC SCT race; the SCOTUS arg that presages TikTok’s demise; the Trump-Alito phone call; the embarrassing 5-4 split on whether Trump is, as pre-president, King; Aileen Cannon’s latest; AND: Michelle Adams’s book THE CONTAINMENT! crooked.com/podcast/is-t...
