Really excited to have been part of this. Science and universities generate pretty good returns on investment. And if we're no longer willing to make such public investments, I'm sure China will be happy to take the lead.

It's almost as if, in creating a platform designed entirely around the goal of owning libs, the GOP lost touch with their humanity.

If I were *trying* to tank the US economy and and put the US behind China in science R&D and global influence, I'm not sure I could outperform Trump's current policy playbook. www.cnn.com/2025/03/06/e...

A friend who is flying to the US from Europe in June just shared that her tickets were unusually cheap. Looks like Canadians are not the only ones planning on spending their tourism money elsewhere www.npr.org/2025/03/06/n...

So distressing. Just so dang distressing.

So grateful to have had the chance to speak at this event with so many outstanding colleagues (including a Nobel prize winner). How will we learn about the harms from industrial processes and commercial products if we get rid of publicly funded academic science? www.kqed.org/news/1203031...

Should this be filed under "duh" or "no duh"? I can't decide.

Finally, it looks like experts at the CDC have been allowed to respond to the growing measles outbreak in TX. Heartbreakingly, they are reporting two deaths. www.cdc.gov/han/2025/han...

He's said it once (maybe several times) before, but it bears repeating now, ah, ah ah ah, ah ah!

Happy news

This is sad, but not at all surprising. On what planet is being fired without cause, followed weeks later by an "oops" email telling you to come back not disruptive? www.npr.org/sections/sho...

The very stable genius who claims to be good at business apparently has no idea that markets hate uncertainty www.nytimes.com/2025/03/06/u...

Any chance Biden would have pursued Justice 40 without these protests? Social movements matter. Just sayin

www.standup4scienceberkeley.com Excited to be a speaker for this event tomorrow at UC Berkeley because it's always a good day to Stand Up 4 Science

Getting rid of the American workers who take care of American veterans is wrong. Veterans will not take this sitting down - we can make this the newest example of Trump being forced to back down from a bad move.

Just restating the simple point: President lacks the constitutional authority to close a department created by Congress. Full stop. Both the creation and on-going funding of these Depts are LAWS not suggestions. This is criminal conduct. www.wsj.com/politics/pol... via @WSJ

More proof the people in charge have a very weak grasp of economics and zero credibility when it comes to good management. When a CEO makes decisions that raises a firms costs relative to output, doesn't the board act quickly to force that CEO out?

Excited to see this story about our new Politics and Health Lab at Boston University published by the student newspaper! @mattmotta.bsky.social dailyfreepress.com/2025/03/01/n...

It's an honor to be part of this panel.

How I wish political scientists could get the general public to understand how much oversight of the bureaucracy there is. Is there a more transparent and accountable bureaucracy on the planet?

Agreed

Just when I think I've wrapped my head around the depravity, it gets even worse www.nytimes.com/2025/03/04/u...

Is it possible that pills asking Americans about "the government" elicit responses shaped mostly by anti-government propaganda, but that when you ask Americans about specific things government does, they are supportive and understand those those things are actually underfunded?

One of these things is not like the others

One way you can tell that DOGE is not doing what they claim they are, modernizing tech or finding waste, is bc Trump and DOGE have ousted 3 entities who ALREADY WERE DOING THAT. @donmoyn.bsky.social describes two here, USDS and 18F. The third are the IGs. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/skilled-te...

If you worked for 18F and got fired, Group together to start a consulting company. It’s just a matter of time before DOGE needs you to fix the mess they inevitably create. They will have to hire your company as a contractor to fix it. But on your terms. I’m happy to invest and/or help

What really gets me about op eds like this is that *this is not news.* Trump advertised that he supports Putin during his first presidency and reaffirmed that during his campaign. A plurality of voters were like, 'fine w/us." www.nytimes.com/2025/02/28/o...

Maybe it's time for ProPublica to revisit it's coverage of the CDC during Covid where it did a terrible job of distinguishing between outcomes driven by civil servants and political appointees.

And to think we could have had a sane, serious government run by an intelligent person who would have acted in the best interests of Americans, and not Vladimir Putin.

I love that our Chancellor is reminding us to let ourselves be guided by our mission and values. Fiat Lux

I don't think I've ever sided with this guy on a matter of foreign policy before. But these are very strange times.

"Totalitarianism in power invariably replaces all first-rate talents, regardless of their sympathies, with those crackpots and fools whose lack of intelligence and creativity is still the best guarantee of their loyalty." - Hannah Arendt

Looks like some Republicans are guessing that this is going to put a dent in Trump's approval rating Trump cancels news conference with Zelensky after contentious Oval Office meeting www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202... s/

What's that you say? OPM has "no authority whatsoever under any statue in the history of the universe" to hire and fire people outside of OPM? Now that's what I'm talkin about. www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

Indeed

Newsflash...our federal agencies are designed to be open and transparent. That federal employees need to go to such lengths to inform the public tells you something about the fragile state of our democracy.

With bird flu circulating in cows and jumping to humans, this seems like a really bad time to halt meetings related to preparing for the 2025-26 flu season.

Why does the falsehood that Republicans can be trusted with the economy seem to stick?

Looks like tomorrow will bring votes on a Republican plan to fund tax cuts for the rich by slashing Medicaid. So this is a great time to contact your Member of Congress.

Insightful, as always

In a 30+ year career as an organization theorist and public administration scholar, I have never come across a study that showed that indiscriminate firing made an organization more efficient. apnews.com/article/doge...

I just read an article in the Texas Tribune where an advertisement popped up telling the reader to "keep blue state chaos out of TX." The article was informing readers how the measles outbreak there has ballooned to over 90 cases. Isn't it ironic, doncha think?

Not sure I want to count chickens before SCOTUS gets ahold of this, this made me breathe a bit easier today.

The only president with a worse/shorter honeymoon period than Trump this time around is Trump last time around.

Do rank and file GOP voters actually support tax cuts for the ultra wealthy?
