Because the Republicans control what goes to the floor. Proposing legislation that won’t go anywhere is performative.

My sister was returning a rug and we were helping her outside the UPS office. We struggled with it, dropping it a few times. It soon looked like we had something rolled up inside and all the passers-by gave us strange looks. We finally realized how it looked and doubled up laughing.

Oh, and Elon needs the teenagers to do the work. He is incapable of doing it himself.

That’s a different question. I believe there are some federal marshals who will do that. It’s more a deterrent to the teenagers. Elon is enough of a narcissist to tough it out, but the teenagers are still teenagers.

Elon and his teenagers can be arrested.

I love that book. I live in Chicago, and I’ve been to the places that are still around.

That happens to me every time, and I’ve been reading Tolkien since 1973. I drag out the last pages of ROTK, not wanting it to end. Don’t skip the Appendices - there’s more backstory, including how Thorin first heard about Bilbo.

I LOVE this album.

I love how people read The Hobbit to their children. I didn’t discover it until 9th grade when a teacher assigned it in English class.

We have a neighbor who plays the piano every afternoon. It’s lovely to sit outside on a warm day and just listen.

They are both great in their own way. When I first read LOTR, I went back and re-read The Hobbit, and I was amazed how many references to the larger story I had missed before. I had the same experience after reading The Silmarillion, and re-reading the other books. Each one enriches the other.

I started it years ago, but could not get into it. But I need to give it another shot.

Tolkien fans love to hear from first-timers! If you do decide to watch the movies, watch LOTR first. The Hobbit movie isn’t as good. Once we draw you in to the larger world, The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime is a must. Good luck and have fun!

I LOVE The Stand and I’ve read it several times.

So it’s my favorite. But Tolkien wrote it for his children, and not everyone likes his style in The Hobbit. LOTR is more an epic story, with big characters and glorious scenes. Different style, but LOTR is much longer. Maybe start The Hobbit? It’s shorter, and introduces you to Middle-earth. 2/2

The Hobbit was written first, and it was so successful that Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings. He went back and re-wrote parts of the Hobbit so the stories could fit together. There’s LOTS of discussion among Tolkien fans about which to read first. I read the Hobbit first, 1/2

Depends on what you like to read. If you’ve seen the movies, you will probably like the books. Tolkien has a theme he calls eucatastrophe - that good can come out of evil - that seems relevant now. Another theme from the movies is “even the smallest person can change the future.”

I re-read The Stand at the beginning of COVID. Not sure I can do it now.

I’ve read it more than 40 times. Never gets old and I find something new every time. Go for it!
