I will increase the fucking thing. #NoContextForYou

Folks who are nominating for Hugos take note - North Continent Ribbon was one of my favourite books of last year, but apparently just too long for the novella category. So do consider Fisher of Stars for novelette (which is a category I know is under-nominated in; here's something you can nominate!)

2024 awards eligibility! "A Fisher of Stars" is that elusive length, a novelette.

People might want to pass this around if it's not widely known... "Animal shelters, rescues, and veterinarian clinics around the U.S. are ...telling pet owners to check their pets' microchips after learning a major microchip company is no longer providing services." www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/n...

Hugo Nominations are open! if you are attending WorldCon in Seattle, and like the story, please consider nominating "The V*mpire." reactormag.com/the-vampire-...

This thread is hilarious but also infuriating because it proves that actually, police do know how to treat a crowd without blinding and beating people

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com

None of us are free until all of us are free. If trans people aren’t safe, neither am I. I know who these people are because they are who they have always been.

OpenAI says it has proof that Deepseek used its work without permission to create something meant to undermine and destroy its product. On behalf of all the authors whose novels and stories were taken as training data, oh no that must be so hard for you.

Every safety regulation was written in blood, frequently with a body count higher than one, and it’s not political to put the blame on people who want to “move fast and break things” when they start breaking human lives.

Wonderful mini-sermon on Vance here. I'll just add that the idea that Augustine's brief aside on "ordered love" (Civ.Dei XV:22) has /anything/ to do with nationalism (the literal earthly city!) or family obligations is not only unsupported by the text, but antithetical to the Augustinian project.

I've said it before but I think the key pathology of the moment is that defensive dynamic of metastasized egoism that kicks in when the slightest *indignity* is felt, channeling it into *indignation* in direct proportion to the *humiliation* that a healthy psyche would feel and act on constructively

I'm just gonna say it - calling Vance a "catholic" slanders catholics. He is wearing our clothes, but he is not of us. He likes the idea of "old fashioned" or "artesinal" Christianity, but he has no understanding of the requirements of our social teachings and the primacy of mercy above all.

No surprise that Vance doesn't understand Catholic Doctrine, Christianity in general, or what Jesus actually said about caring for those around us. Not because he's a convert--actually lots of converts have a very firm grasp on a lot of Catholic doctrine. No, it's because he's a creepy weirdo.

As a queer and disabled creator, I do not owe anybody expressions of my pain and fear. I've posted about it, and I'll post again when I have meaningful things to say. It's dehumanizing to expect everything out of my mouth to be despair. I think my friends and readers get that.

Oh no, the Chinese plagiarism machine might have plagiarized the American plagiarism machine search.app/gLKPBELL2weQ...

OpenAI: China stole our tech!! Luddites: Oh weird how'd you make your tech in the first place OpenAI: 😡

Something giving me extra delight is how obvious China's Deepseek play has made it to the American public that genAI is not lifesaving tech that can save humanity but is in fact just a cheap empty toy that shouldn't cost or generate a dime

I love this for them. I hope they're all wiped out.

I don't have time for Tea Snobs even in someone else's mentions. Or any kind of Hot Caffeine Snobs. By "snob" I don't mean "picky about my leaf water" because I mean, go ahead and be picky. No, I mean "I sneer at your obviously inferior taste in leaf water" assholes.

Truer words.

Happy LBtSoaSM day to those who celebrate!

A reminder that "Stockholm Syndrome" is a fake diagnosis, invented by a man who had never met the woman in question, for the purpose of shielding police from her criticism. www.the-independent.com/news/world/a...

It’s just occurred to me to mention this: My novel coming out from Tor in 2026 now has a title! The Subtle Art of Folding Space

"There are 3 things every man instinctively knows that he can do better than every other man- lighting a fire, opening a door, and writing a book." -PG Wodehouse

Not originally my snark, but when I came across it I was amused: I never expected the Imperial Radch books to predict anything, and yet here we are, legally all the same gender.

Well! The shortlist for the Audie Awards is up, and turns out Lake of Souls is a finalist for Best Science Fiction audiobook. Adjoa Andoh is a queen & makes everything she reads a hundred times more awesome. www.audiopub.org/audies-final...

I have a new alien flash fiction collection out now. My blog post discusses what it's about and how I came to write it. This is my first book since I caught covid in 2020. blog.polenthblake.com/2025/01/ever...

"He is red and red and rust-red, up to his elbows, his knees, his neck, as if he has swum in the vast dark chambers of a heart and emerged, just now, still dripping." -Madeline Miller, The Song of Achilles Contrary to what is often taught, you can repeat a word, as long as you're intentional.

Without Mel Brooks hiring Lynch to make THE ELEPHANT MAN — on the strength of ERASERHEAD alone — he is very likely just a guy who made a weird film at AFI. That whole filmography you love doesn’t happen. We all need sponsors and mentors and patrons. We need people who believe in us.

The idea that people without children "have little stake in the future" is so bizarre. Does my dream of one day seeing a re-telling of Irish mythology using only Muppets mean nothing to you

NYT doesn't know about the man who saw the deep and built the wall around Uruk

if you want artists to make weirder art, you have to create stable living conditions that allow them to. homogeneity isn't a matter of artists lacking culture-- there are many soulful artists out there-- it's a matter of unregulated corporate dominance combined with artists who cant afford to create

If genAI was any good, all they'd have to do is tell us about it, and show us a demo. We'd taste it and say, "Egad! This is truly a tool of the gods!" and we'd throw all our money at it. But it's no good, so they jizz it all over our basic work tools, stand back, and smugly say, "you're welcome."

So rather than thread in someone’s mentions, I’m going to mention a talk that I went to in 2004-ish from a guy who researches the psychological impact of money on happiness and I have no idea who it is so take my memory of this with a massive grain of salt.

ICYMI I have a new book out!

Really happy @annleckie.com recommended Asunder by @kerstinhall.bsky.social. I just finished it last night and absolutely loved it. What a world and cast of characters.

megawealth is a curse! you become acutely aware of the needs you have that cannot be satisfied through material means AND you are socially ill-positioned to be in a place where you can experience authentic human connection because everyone around you has every incentive to lie to you!

I think it is important to remember that the US is not poor. It is, in fact, fabulously wealthy...like a lot more wealthy than the next country down the list. And yet other countries, with less, have crafted safety net policies, public services and public space that make their citizens more secure..

Lots of talk about Tanith Lee lately. She was an absolute formative influence on my childhood. The books I adored were The Unicorn series (I vibed with Tanaquil SO MUCH), and Cyrion (which were a quietly subversive sword and sorcery), and these are available in ebook, at least in Europe. Grab them.

If we can take one thing from the way lynch talks about art I think it should be to never again dilute your vision and don't put off any art you want to make because it all dies with you, there's no other way, there's no one else
