Combining that with your profile pic makes me imagine the instructions coming from Hammerhead. (though Hammerhead had a better hit rate)

I suspect the "don't learn anything at all about the game, just trust me it's the best thing ever and play it" thing is part of the problem too. It gives people an expectation (and probably different people different expectations) that's hard to live up to.

Sure it's knowledge based but throwing everything that makes you reflect on what you're reading under the metroidbrainia banner and saying "it's just like Obra Dinn and Outer Wilds" proves how much we lack experience and vocabulary to talk about puzzles and mystery games.

(and sorry if it's weird to swap languages in reply, I took French in school many years ago so I can read it okay but not really write in it)

Most of the indie success stories these days can be traced to getting shown off by a big YouTuber/streamer, so this just seems like an extension of that. In some sense they've become the new gatekeepers of people's attention.

Like how this style of clue works (it's a cryptic crossword clue, or at least it would be if "til cow works" anagrammed to the answer) or why they'd put one in RuneScape (idk you're the expert)?

The Link's Awakening Switch port runs at one point had a midboss yeet you into another dungeon. I didn't know the details, but it was funny to watch.

Inventory Wilmot's Warehouse, you have to remember where you put everything and send a little square man to collect the item you need.

I'm too spoiled by streamers/chats that are good about it- when watching a stream for a puzzle game and half of chat is hinting it's difficult to watch.

I've heard of stuff in the modern games that could be that obscure (like how to evolve into Runerigus), but I don't know if there was a path to discover it short of randomly stumbling across it or datamining.

Epic making Humankind one of their free games this/last week is in the same category.

I'm not sure if it's exactly the same category, but I've semi-jokingly used "world's worst database UI game" for Her Story and its direct descendants.

For a second there I thought you meant bugs (creatures), which could be relaxing if that's your kind of thing.

Sid Sackson's Haggle is a bit like this with the extra twist that you're also given slips of paper with fragments of the scoring rules so you have to trade those to know how to win.

As long as Outer Wilds released something it can be GotY. 2024 was the artbook, right?

Are we talking "someone gets murdered" mystery bus or "break down in dense fog at midnight" mystery bus?
