Friends in the Northern Hemisphere who plant things in the ground: in the pre-Spring months, how do you prepare?

I cannot recommend enough replacing a lot of your normal news consumption with Fix The News, a newsletter focused on serious, deep good news from across a broad swathe of human achievement. We can’t and shouldn’t ignore bad news, but this really helps give me perspective.

My lab has a position for a programmer--if you have programming skills and have recently left the NIH please contact me.

The universe is magical, why the fuck are we doing all this with our corner of it?

Some good news! USDA has (finally) approved a bird flu vaccine for poultry flocks. www.science.org/content/arti...

You should get off social this weekend. You can do that while still learning something about our world and system: @kjephd.bsky.social ‘s “Democracy for Busy People” is currently $3.99 on bookshop.org’s new ebook platform.bookshop.org/p/books/demo...sm

There’s a gorgeous, synth-y track I love from this producer and singer-songwriter. My own time playing with synths, and loosely studying music composition, means that I can hear the minor difference between the demo and the recently released streaming version. This is so rewarding!

There was a time in my life when I felt extremely bad asking for help, but that time is well past. The government is actively trying to kill my kid, and I would like a little support as I get us (including my ex-wife and her partner) to safety. Thanks! gofund.me/60443e5c

I’ve had an incredibly lonely time in my field because I’ve been wanting to cultivate developer-focused tools and companies as an applied sociotechnical science And people have just wanted me to give out stickers or whatever

it's been a rough week so i thought i'd rotate a gyro for everyone. as a treat

I misread this as “tries to eat an entire startup” I like both

In our episode on the #NIH , @analog-ashley.bsky.social shared examples of the life-changing scientific careers kickstarted by federal funding for diversity in science programs. Don't let them rewrite this narrative; these programs benefit all of us www.changetechnically.fyi/2396236/epis...

We’ve forgotten how. No, really, this was my profession for years. And instead of dedicating resources to the craft of making great, custom software you love Companies like Sonos are leading the way to cross-platform garbage apps that barely work at all, even as it destroys their businesses

This makes me think a lot about how many businesses there are where the truth is bad for business, and also why I am tired

Imagine this happening collaboratively *between* users at the scale of a Wikipedia or a Stack Overflow and you’ll know why most folks just don’t build platform products anymore

Okay I know everything is absolutely awful but were you aware FKA twigs dropped a new album, and it’s all dance music?

The NIH pays off beyond our dreams. In a special edition of Change, Technically, @analog-ashley.bsky.social and I get into the facts of the #NIH : what it does, how it works, and the consequences of disrupting its essential work. Listen here: www.changetechnically.fyi/2396236/epis...

I got laid off suddenly and I'm looking for a new gig — remote or Denver based data scientist/ML engineer roles I'm good enough at coding to not break prod and good enough at humans that I used to be a therapist Reach out via the email on the resume I've linked below or DM with leads, thank you!!

Because such things are necessary, a non-exhaustive list of what’s currently bringing me joy: - learning to use my Roland S-1 tweak synthesizer - the feral cat I adopted who loves when I sing to her - sunlight (when there is any) You?

Make sure your neighbors know how to reach you if they need help. Make sure they know you want them to

One day soon it’s going to be time to talk more about how having the role of “community manager” foisted on me led to disdain for the word community itself, which led to disdain for what arguably makes us most human

I won’t pretend to know what’s going to happen with the TT ban, but I did start my tech career running a marketplace where small business owners got paid And there’s a physics to messing with solopreneurs income I don’t think anyone pulling the strings on these policies has priced in

“Hurt People Hurt People: The Corporate Culture Edition”

We are designing a new research project in the Developer Success Lab & seeking to understand software engineers' experiences during *incidents* We're bringing together a community group for a 1 time zoom session to help us learn. Let us know if you're interested: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

I’m out of half and half for my coffee so I have to go back to bed, I’m sure you understand

Another way is possible ❤️

I am absolutely afraid of the times we’re sailing into, but I also feel clearer on my own purpose than ever before, and one really is the best antidote to the other.

It hasn’t always been easy to find words for who I am and what I do. But here’s a working snapshot: I am a behavioral designer who uses developer tools as my medium.

I am going to say something radically optimistic: The ONLY way we get through this is by countering individualism with enduring community. And I believe that most people want to be in communities that care for each other.
