It seems to be a case of "pick your pollution". As far as I know, there's no scheme in place to return empties to the manufacturer for recycling.

I've been using one for the past couple of years. They work just as well, if not better. They don't need a propellant, but they are bulkier because they are made of a much bigger chunk of plastic.

Good. I spent all my working life in the coal industry, I draw a pension from it, and I met my wife at a pit. They are horrible, shitty places. Their only saving grace is the people who work in them.
