Latest Foreign Desk for Monocle Radio. Considering the 12 Day War, and what - if anything - was decided by it. With @arashtehran.bsky.social, @radiofreetom.bsky.social and Tara Kangarlou. monocle.com/radio/shows/...

“For years, Iran threatened America and Israel with destruction but avoided getting into a direct war with either of them. Now it has experienced a fight with these enemies and may be forced to rethink its belligerent posture,” @arashtehran.bsky.social writes:

The Islamic Republic of Iran is an isolated, corrupt kleptocracy, and its rejectionist foreign policy has failed. The regime likely still retains enough repressive capacity to stay in power but it is now in an exceedingly vulnerable position.

This moment was always coming, if Israel’s initial salvo was to make any strategic sense. What comes next is the big question.

In 2012, President Obama called out Republicans criticizing diplomacy with Iran: “If some of these folks think it’s time to launch a war, they should say so. When I see the casualness with which some of these folks talk about war, I’m reminded of the costs…This is not a game.”

If there is regime change in Iran, the country will turn from an ideological actor to an interest-focused authoritarian state writes @arashtehran.bsky.social foreignpolicy.com/2025/06/19/w...

Bombing Iran is a terrible idea. It’s unlikely to work—and nothing could be more perilous to American democracy than going to war under Donald Trump, Robert Kagan writes.

US Democratic leadership is still acting like there is an American consensus on supporting Israel. And, well, there isn't.

Guy who has golfed 33 days this year thinks Americans need to work more.

Seems like a problem with sending anonymous agents all across the country to sweep people off the street without wearing uniforms or any identifying information, doesn't it?

@arashtehran.bsky.social speaks here for every Iranian I have ever met. "I hate Khamenei’s regime. But I love Iran even more." www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

"Instead of celebrating the Israeli strikes, I’m gripped with fear and trepidation about my country’s future." The latest from @arashtehran.bsky.social:

Yes — countless unions of teachers, metalworkers etc

It should be acknowledged that many Iranian labor syndicates and civil society organizations (including some that have opposed the government) have come out explicitly against the Israeli onslaught. This is the society that will have to navigate an Iran after the missiles stop or become intermittent

Interesting report here on the new Israeli intel about Iran's nuclear programme: "Even if US analysts accept that Iran has the intent to pursue a bomb and has accelerated its push, they may disagree it has crossed a threshold or that the threat is truly imminent" apple.news/AKHVEzOhoTa2...

Tocci is worth a read on this because she has spent years thinking and writing about it

Wishing safety for my friend Seth and the people of Israel and Iran — two nations who have no reason to fight one another

For years, Washington's war hawks have told us that they're the ones who really care about the people of Iran. And now Iranians-- including those who have risked their lives fighting their horrible regime— are desperately asking not to be bombed. And the hawks want to escalate the war.

Why did Israel attack Iran now? What are Iranians saying about what's happening? How much will the US get involved? And how does this war end? The brilliant @arashtehran.bsky.social joins me to discuss on this week's @prospectmagazine.co.uk podcast www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/podcasts/pro...

Robert Pape argues that Israel’s air war will neither destroy Iran's nuclear program nor bring about regime change. It will be a futile exercise that will end in a quagmire (most likely for the US) www.foreignaffairs.com/iran/israels...

Pride month activity of doomscrolling this map

🧵with some useful Israeli analysis on Israel-Iran (including a map of Israeli strikes)

the lesson of this isn't that tucker carlson is actually good but that you should ask these people basic factual questions instead of bullshit about politics

this is a strong ticket

Recommended piece by Arash Azizi. “I can’t think about activism under the sound of drones and missiles, can I?...I don’t support the targeting of civilians anywhere, whether in Iran or Israel.” Regime change that is forced by bombs instead of the people's will is never the right path.

Speaking to a family member in #Iran: "They tell us to stay away from sensitive areas, but people don't even know where sensitive areas are, so they can keep away. The country was not ready for war. There are shortages. Many people don't have vehicles to leave Tehran." 1/3

At this point if anyone here has anti panic attack advice then please share, I’ll take anything

I spoke to a dozen of activists inside Iran. They have one thing in common: They oppose the Israeli attacks and they want the war to stop. www.theatlantic.com/internationa...

Iranian oppositionists are angry at their regime. "But they in no way welcomed the Israeli strikes on their country. They worried about their own safety—and also about societal collapse and the destruction of Iran’s infrastructure," @arash_tehran writes:

If you follow Iran stuff and dont read everything @arashtehran.bsky.social writes, then you don’t really follow Iran stuff.
