This one in particular has an unmistakably "Who's On First" feel. Thank you for sharing!

This post reminded me that he also did the art for the 1989 John Bellairs novel The Trolley to Yesterday, which is set in Constantinople in 1453! I honestly remember nothing else about it but it's got some neat art, like this showing the Basilica Cistern. goreyana.blogspot.com/2010/06/trol...

Fucking hell. I'd call this some craven, fence-sitting bullshit, but it's not even that. It's a total capitulation to the hard right while trying to say words they hope will get everyone else off their back.

These are real people that we study. They loved and they hated and they feared and they hoped. They lived and they died. And you spend time with them, and sometimes you mourn them.

This is true! More evidence the DOGE bros don't know what they're doing and don't really care.

Because this isn't actually a "RIF," which is a formal process in the government with protections and compensation for workers. They're firing employees in probationary status, which means they can be fired more or less on the spot for performance. Thus, they have to pretextually cite performance.

DOGE is not a govt efficiency project. Firing 1 in 4 fed employees would cut govt spending by 1%. DOGE is a political control project. Firing and terrorizing public employees is a means to weakening state regulation & strengthening a personalist presidency donmoynihan.substack.com/p/doge-misma...

What we’re seeing is not the pendulum swinging back toward the right after the left went too far. We’re seeing a moral panic, a society-wide assault on a phantom leftist who wants to ban Dr. Seuss and arrest you for using the wrong pronouns and put kitty litter boxes in classrooms.

Plus, since COVID particularly, a lot of the older folks who had been doing this work have had to retire, so you'll probably find that your local government desperately needs people! 2/2)

In fact, if anyone is feeling particularly anxious about this, one of the best things you can do is sign up to be an election official (that is, a poll worker) and help run a polling place! It's a long day of work, but you get to help people vote and ensure a fair election. 1/2)
