The Denman Glacier has a world of unknowns but we know enough to know it holds risks we need to assess. This voyage is so important. Nice summary here www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02...

Cuts to NSF expected to be at 50% reduction in force for an independent agency that fuels discovery and innovation. "The NSF budget was $9B, or 0.13% of the total [budget]." This is not about fiscal prudence. This is about killing universities. nanoscale.blogspot.com/2025/02/the-...

The National Academies released the Decadal Survey "Forecasting the Ocean" stating: "U.S. investment in ocean science, engineering, and technology is not keeping pace with growing societal needs, even as U.S. competitors are increasing investments in ocean science and advancing their capacities" 1/2

3 of the top 4 institutions receiving the most NSF funding are for earth, ocean, and atm science 1. Leidos(MD): McMurdo Station on Antarctica 3. UCAR(CO): National Center for Atmospheric Research 4. WHOI(MA): Ocean Observatories, Deep Submergence, research ships dellweb.bfa.nsf.gov/top50inst2/d...

I’m so sad for my former students and friends (and all of the scientists they have believed in along the way).

I’m sorry, why is my ADHD a threat to Americans? I can tell you when it will be… when I can’t get my meds (all my friends will laugh knowingly when they read this). www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

My grandfather didn’t liberate Dachau and live the rest of his life haunted by what he saw for this disgusting display of ignorance and fascism!

What these nihilistic vandals are doing to dismantle science & medicine—generations of expertise & public service & life improving benefits—is cultural revolution level national self harm. No foreign foe could inflict such brutal damage & senseless suffering on US so fast & effectively & unresisted.

Roses are red This panel's all men I can't believe we're Having this conversation again #AcademicValentines

1 year ago this month: had the pleasure of achieving a personal dream, w/ this international team supported by Korea Polar Research Institute & US NSF. Two 150m ice cores from the Pine Island Bay region of #Antarctica; 1st of their kind to reveal 150 year climate history in this crucial region. 🙏❄️

To America’s 2.3 million federal employees: Don’t accept a buyout. Neither Musk nor even Trump has the legal authority to make such an offer. And even if they did, would you trust them to follow through on it? Sincerely, Robert Reich Former U.S.Secretary of Labor

Although NOAA's page on atmospheric CO2 levels has vanished, you can still get this vital information from Ralph Keeling's team at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego keelingcurve.ucsd.edu Please follow bsky.app/profile/keel... for updates and share Don't let science be hidden

This is a great idea. Do you know anyone in Congress you can talk to?

I can’t wait for the second round of search terms: climate, sea level, etc. For all you scientists (and you know who you are) who think you won’t be affected because your broader impacts are amazingly still limited to training grad students and chatting to K-12 kids, this won’t stop at one list.

Also, weekly grocery bill at Publix was double last several weeks. And shelves were empty. Trying to increase profits before tariffs take effect …

Message from NSF director to all PIs on 2/2/25. Sorry if this has already been covered 1000x, but in case someone hasn’t seen it.

The silence from our universities has been deafening. Tell them to grow a spine and stand up for their scientists! Top NIH funded schools: UC - [email protected] UW - [email protected] John Hopkins - [email protected] Penn - [email protected], (215) 898-7005 Duke - [email protected]

They are governing like they don't care about winning future elections. You have to ask yourself why.

Complying in advance is not a good look, but it seems par for the course for this director. I’d be willing to bet he claws back funds for his unfunded TIPS directorate. www.science.org/content/arti...

The buyouts email sent by OPM uses the same headline as what Elon Musk sent to Twitter employees when he took over the company — “Fork in the Road.” It also has a similar “click yes or no” form at the end of the email. www.opm.gov/fork

Impossible to overstate the confusion, anxiety, and chaos this order has already caused among researchers, even as a last minute ruling prevented its implementation. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

"All review panels, new awards, and all payments of funds under open awards will be paused as the agency conducts the required reviews and analysis." NSF statement on the impact of Trump administration executive orders. new.nsf.gov/executive-or...

“I think I’ve seen this film before, and I didn’t like the ending…”

Please note: This event has been *canceled* due to the recent announcement of a federal hiring freeze: www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

I am begging the national media to start taking this seriously. Stop buying the claims that the framing of "temporary" or "pause." They are altering the review processes of federally funded scientific research from merit-based peer review processes to political screening by ideologues.

This is a violation of the constitution. Congress determines how to spend money. The executive must spend it.

Well well well…

This. This is what overthrew the elite enslavers in the 1859s and the robber barons in the 1890s. We need these new papers everywhere.

Let's talk a bit about the geology of the Gulf of Mexico--something vastly bigger than the body of water separating the U.S., Mexico & Cuba. Its geology goes into Arkansas, much of Florida, & well into Texas & coastal Mexico. (Figs from Snedden & Galloway's "The Gulf of Mexico Sedimentary Basin")

325 years ago tonight (9 p.m. Jan. 26, 1700) a M~9 Cascadia subduction earthquake rocked the west coast from #VancouverIsland to northern California. The Juan de Fuca Plate slipped up to 20 m, causing a large tsunami, strong shaking and landslides www.earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/historic-his... ⚒️🧪
