This is about the fifth major university who announced reductions in PhD admissions this week in response to federal research cuts. Absolutely awful for students who are trying to get into grad school right now.

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

I really liked this idea of using a histogram as a legend in a choropleth map (since land isn't unemployed; people are), so I made a little guide to doing it with #rstats, {ggplot2}, and {patchwork} www.andrewheiss.com/blog/2025/02...

NEW: The National Science Foundation fired nearly 170 workers this morning. They include people who had already cleared their one-year probationary period only to have it changed to two years earlier this month. @kimzetter.bsky.social reports for @wired.com www.wired.com/story/nation...

Recently read @kurtjgray.bsky.socialā€™s new book Outraged and it is great! Highly recommend for anyone interested in moral psych!

FANTASTIC ICPSR at U Mich is coordinating the archiving of at-risk federal data (all of it?) You can upload data you have & search for data you donā€™t have www.datalumos.org/datalumos/

Gonna be teaching a one credit excel class for our psych undergrads later this springā€¦ what are some things you do in excel often and/or something you wish you learned you could do in Excel a long time ago!?

American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12

Higher regional temperatures linked to greater helping of strangers. Curious given the repeated links between heat and aggression. Suppose it's more evidence that altruism and aggression often co-exist and not polar opposites. bpspsychub.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Highly recommend the new Stanford Prison Experiment doc! A few of the most interesting things I learned from it: - Zimbardo claims guards made the rules and their behavior occurred naturallyā€¦ but archival evidence shows there was a day of training for the guards and some were told to ā€œbe tougherā€ šŸ§µ

Can we reduce polarization with empathy? Just published a new (replication) study with @mrooduijn.bsky.social and Matthijs Gillissen showing that different components of empathy have quite different effects [1/5] www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

New paper out in PSPB: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... We investigated whether historical Ku Klux Klan presence in an area is associated with higher levels of modern-day implicit bias.

Two political psych starter packs! Both have been around, but 2 has had a lot more people added. Check them out if you havenā€™t already 1: go.bsky.app/T2Uc2Bx 2: go.bsky.app/43FXWwj

"Interacting as equals reduces partisan polarization in Mexico" w Ken Greene, Erin Rossiter, and Enrique Seira. Fresh off the press: www.nature.com/articles/s41.... Ungated version: ssrn.com/abstract=445....

Nicholas Jover needs his own song at this point. Any ideas, @arseblog.com ? #Arsenal

**Assignment: Final Presentation** Assistant professor: "Choose an article, and prepare a presentation for class" Associate professor: "Chose a PEER-REVIEWED PRIMARY RESEARCH article and prepare a 15 MINUTE presentation ABOUT THIS ARTICLE for class USING POWERPOINT"

I include this in most shareable R scripts I write

Seems like my old post is getting some traction with new followers. With just 10 days left, here's a reminder that I will be reviewing PhD applications in social-personality psych for my lab at UIC. Details & research priorities are on my lab website. Please let you students/ lab managers know!

Created an affective polarization starter pack! Please share if youā€™re interested in this topic and self-nominate if you study affective polarization (broadly defined). Looking forward to connecting with some more people and learning about your cool research and opinions!

Academic? New to Bluesky? Recommendation: put your research interests in your bio, to gain followers. Okay: Social [or other] Psychologist Better: Social [or other] Psychologist studying X, Y, Z Help us to find and follow you!

going to create a starter pack for researchers studying in-group/out-group dynamics and leave about half the relevant people out of it

People who read letters of rec for potential grad studentsā€¦ how much does it matter if the letter writer includes the name of your school in the letter? E.g. admission to ā€œBelmont Universityā€ vs ā€œyour programā€? Trying to decide if itā€™s worth my time to change the university name on all of these LORs

Happy fall from Annie and Miel!

Looking for information about journal turnaround times? Scirev.org crowd-sources data from journals across all fields then anonymously compiles it. Help the scientific community by sharing a bit of your publication data today!

Iā€™ve heard other people suggest doing this beforeā€¦ I have 12 students and counting who I am writing letters for this semester and am tempted to use this approachā€¦ my only worry is it might hurt their application. Does anyone know how these types of responses are received by admissions committees?

"you will not be asked to write a full letter of recommendation, we will only ask you a series of short-answer essays" oh my god, please don't describe that as if you're doing me a *favor.*

A good rule of thumb: for the most part, people (even you! even me!) are incapable of identifying the actual causes of their opinions. Asking them will yield many interesting stories, but rarely the actual cause.

I took an MLM class in grad school in which I learned just enough to be dangerous, but not enough to do multilevel modeling wellā€¦ but I recently stumbled upon some slides from @page-gould.bsky.socialā€˜s MLM workshop from 2013 and they are PHENOMENAL! Highly recommend: www.page-gould.com/mlm/aps/

send your papers to Open Mind!!! the journal, started by the wonderful Richard Aslin, is leading the way for serious outlets for science that are free to publish in and free to read, funded by universities themselves I'm not exactly uncritical of harvard ā€” this is SUCH a good use of crimson $$$$

Social Psychology at the University of Virginia is hiring at the Assistant Professor level!! We're open to all social psych research areas. Please spread the word! #socialpsyc #PsychSciSky apply.interfolio.com/152802 psychology.as.virginia.edu/social-psych...

New pre-print out with Cheryl Kaiser: ā€œFamily Ties: Perceived College Student-Parent Political Differences and Relationship Qualityā€ We survey college student-parent dyads to test if perceived political difference predicts worse relationship quality and findā€¦ not really! osf.io/preprints/ps...

Iā€™ve up my pedagogy game from ā€œWhat questions do you have for meā€ to ā€œTurn to your classmate and brainstorm some questions students might have but are too shy to ask.ā€ It worked ridiculously well.

Stoked to have been awarded a grant (with Cheryl Kaiser) from the John Templeton Foundation to study whether intraindividual increases in religiosity leads to reductions in affective polarization! Canā€™t wait to get started! šŸ˜ www.belmont.edu/stories/arti...

Excited to announce that I'll be recruiting a graduate student to join us here in the Empathy & Moral Psychology (EMP) Lab during this application season, to start in fall 2025. Come join our team to study empathy, outrage, and morality at Penn State Psychology! 1/n
