Why would we abandon the prosperous, democratic nations of Europe, our allies for one hundred years, to "partner" with weak, poor Russia, a longtime adversary and dictatorship currently in the middle of an unprovoked invasion of a neighboring state? Treason. It's treason

The next Chicago SF book discussion pick is "The Ministry of Time", by Kaliane Bradley. We'll meet on March 15 at 2 PM at the Oak Park (IL) Library. (To attend online, see reply.) We'll also pick the April book at the next mtg. (Hint: We hope to predict a 2025 Hugo nominee.) 1/3

Deleting “Anansi Boys” and replacing it with Heinlein’s “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” because I should have gone with my original instincts and also fuck Nxxl Gxxmxn.

My latest. As journalists and writers, we have a duty to use language that is accurate and describes our current reality. I’m no longer going to talk about DEI/Anti-DEI. Let’s be clear. We are facing racial purges and re-segregation. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

I remember the last time a president tried to do that, he got impeached for it.

Here's another one from the New York Times, utter illiteracy: spending is limited by acts of Congress; the Treasury payment system executes lawful transactions. It is never a tool to "potentially limit government spending" and to use it that way is illegal.

This language describes a coup. You have to be a government employee, subject to the rules & procedures that bind gov employees, to do this kind of work. This is a blatant abuse of the public trust by the Trump administration, a true 5-alarm fire. www.wired.com/story/elon-m...

(!!!!) That the WH would make this mistake would be funny under normal circumstances. This is one of the first big items the admin (thru its press secretary) touted itself for. Blatant incompetence.

Where are the defenders of the US as Elon and nameless private agents infiltrate US agencies, commandeer US servers, steal US data, seize US money, march US officials from US buildings? Who sallies forth from the FBI? The CIA? Congress? DoD? The media? This is a coup—and America appears defenseless.

There are in fact lots of laws against all of this stuff, and this is exactly what the Founders were worried about. It's a problem that the Department of Justice and much of the Federal judiciary are corrupted by the same forces breaking these laws but there are many laws being broken, right now!

"Those responsible for the sacking, have been sacked"

Anyway as they pull bodies out of the Potomac bear in mind that the guiding ethos of Trumpism is that the TSA, NTSB, and FAA should be radically downsized and run by dudes whose main qualifications are loyalty are a willingness to say “cunt” a lot

Cannot stress enough that we don't have a President. Trump is an addled figurehead for Musk, the Heritage Foundation and a bunch of teenagers from JD Vance's group chat.

The new foreign policy stance under Trump/Rubio seems to be the removal and shut down of US soft power mechanisms, to be supplanted by the threat of hard power to achieve foreign policy ends. This is how you push the world to nuclear war in the intermediate term.

Let's be clear: the Medicaid portal went offline because of Donald Trump's orders. The only reason it is back on is due to outrage from the American people. Now, they are trying to lie about it. Medicaid was never taken away from Americans under President Biden.

🚨 PSA: If you are trans, do NOT mail in your passport to attempt to change your gender marker. The State Department is currently collecting them unchanged and will not give a public timeline for returning them. You could be without a passport indefinitely.

I have to do this periodically, but... Once more for the stupid people:

I've been making a real effort to find positive but factual content from folks who don't shy away from serious social commentary but OTOH aren't obsessed with 24-hr news cycle gotcha posturing, and… Holy cow, "History of Fashion". Like, I had no idea. This is awesome stuff. For instance: Abby Cox

Revisiting this today. The love of art from Lynch exploded out to every one of his pieces. Great work by @maggiemaefish.bsky.social www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr65...

This is factually and morally right.

I talked to 10 current and former Meta employees about the company's surrender to the right on speech issues. All were upset. One person called the changes "a precursor to genocide" www.platformer.news/meta-fact-ch...

it's time to kill the music it's time to cut the lights it's time to fight the Muppets in the parking lot tonight

Becoming lowkey convinced one of the chief issues of our time is suburbanites parasitising off of economic powerhouse cities they despise by benefiting from their economies but paying them no tax. It seems to be a problem like everywhere.

I'm designing a Festivus Film Fest, and need 2 more movies about The Airing of the Grievances. So far I've got "The Ref" (1994) and "The Lion in Winter" (1968). Any suggestions?

Will the constitutional crisis be as bad as cooking intelligence to lead the country into a disastrous war?

Some of my friends and I have for years used the phrase "Oh, Pudsy, make him stop!". I've looked on and off for years to find the source, and finally found it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqRk...

I personally have almost zero power to change what's happening right now: My job isn't influential, my friends circle is pretty narrow, my finances are already pared to the bone. But shutting out all knowledge of the slow-rolling catastrophe taking over my country (and the world) seems unpatriotic.

THE CLAIM: Donald Trump referred to his political opponents as "vermin" who are "poisoning the blood of the country." FACTCHECK: Trump did make these statements using these exact words, but it being true is potentially very damaging politically to Donald Trump. OUR RATING: Mostly false

Senator who last week promoted a tweet that called his legislative opponents traitors punishable by death now asks “to take the political temperature down.”

If you’re going to Worldcon, now’s about the time you should get a Covid booster shot to make sure it’s as effective as possible while you’re there.
