How do complex social behaviors evolve and shape species' success? Here doi.org/10.1038/s420... we reveal how a key social behavior in ants - mouth-to-mouth food sharing #trophallaxis - emerged as ants opportunistically exploited new ecological niches as terrestrial environments changed.

This is what happens when two social insect labs host our departmental’s happy hour Karl Glastad’s effort here! 🤣🤣

Robber flies (Diptera: Asilidae) are voracious predators of other insects. They patiently wait for prey to pass by and then grab them. They use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to inject digestive enzymes and then suck out the insides. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, Texas, 17 Jun 2017.

Apologies for this long post I put together to explain to non-scientists the impact of NIH cuts: Last night, an “atomic bomb” was dropped on the biomedical science community. We were informed that effective immediately, indirect costs on NIH grants (both current and future) would be fixed at 15%.

I hope you will all join me in expressing your thanks to the NIH and NSF staff who are working in an impossibly difficult and chaotic environment to keep science going in our country.

I have a bunch of pictures of tiny tiny wasps. They are very cool and they come in alm sorts of shapes and colors, but they are very hard to photograph, mainly because of their size, but also because they move around a lot haha. #macro #hymenoptera #insects #parasitoids

Trop Bio lab alumnus, Dr. Diego Ocampo, published the final chapter of his amazing dissertation on hybridization in #birds of #Neotropics. Through field experiments, we find that plumage traits distinct between populations are not used in species recognition. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

At long last, my first paper (ever, first-author, and with @davetoews.bsky.social) is out in @plosone.org 🐦🎶 We quantified and compared song divergence within and between 8 pairs of common North American songbirds—please check it out! journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...

If you are interested in the biological function of piRNAs and how they interact with TEs, this is the tool for you (for any organism with relevant info available) - full credit to @alicegodden.bsky.social who came up with this brilliant idea! And enjoy the fish 🐟 eating the Pi(e) 🥧

Collecting trip along our climatic transect! Success! ✨✨✨ Doctoral student @alyciajohnson.bsky.social leads this exciting project to test for signatures of climatic adaptation in Mischocyttarus mexicanus wasps! #wasplove #climate #ProudPI #uberwasp 🚗🐝

I can't be the only human who suddenly feels a deeper kinship with parasitic isopods

Wanna come work in Yellowstone and its archaea with us?

On the flight home to Costa Rica, I heard the most uncalibrated conversations from foreigners. Privilege and lack of awareness blows my mind. Also, there are no "expats". Everyone is an immigrant in another country. Respect our country or don't come.

Our paper on the phylogeny of Nematoda 🪱came out on the last day of 2024 in @systbiol.bsky.social. Well at least the link is, the PDF will come later... What started off as a collaboration invitation to design UCE probes snowballed building a phylogeny of the whole phylum using BUSCOs...

my first preprint is out! taking this project from ideation to journal submission was one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. i am so grateful to everyone from Dr. Syuan-Jyun Sun's lab at NTU for contributing and guiding me through this! check out the lab here: sites.google.com/view/sjsun

My heritage is critical to me, so I asked my department if we could change my office sign to my whole name. Today I walked in and voilà! I am excited for the same when my lab renovations are done. Little actions can have strong cascading effects! 🌟

#teamwasp 2024, including our mascot Rocky the yellowjacket @urochester.bsky.social! #ProudPI Wrapping up my first year as a TT professor! Mil gracias (a thousand thanks) to everyone who has supported me. Those of us from non-traditional trajectories and minoritized backgrounds belong in academia!

We’re excited to advertise the Microbial Friends and Foes REU program! Please share info with your undergrads, for 10 weeks paid research experience at Cornell. Apps due on Feb 1. @heatherfeaga.bsky.social cihmid.cornell.edu/academics-pr...

Cuckoo wasp (family Chrysididae), Mojave Desert. These small (this one was 7-9 mm) wasps don't sting, and parasitize ground-nesting bees or wasps. If they're caught invading a burrow, they curl up like pillbugs; the host's sting can't pierce their armor, so they get thrown out and fly off safely. 🐙🌿

30% of non-native English speakers often decide not to attend an international conference due to #languagebarriers. @ICCB2025 we are seriously trying to reduce language barriers as much as possible. See our initiatives here: conbio.org/mini-sites/i... Our initiatives include:

Reposting because the final version finally came out and there are way more people on the site now. To you it might just be a genome note, to me it's the first fully Mongue lab paper (feat. @erincpow.bsky.social and @kkbugtime.bsky.social )! A #newPI milestone! academic.oup.com/g3journal/ar...

This is my right hand man

🌟 Fantastic postdoc opportunity with an equally fantastic PI! 👇🏽

🐜-sitting for the Glastad lab. Always loyal to #wasplove, but these girls are amazing!

Please share widely! We have two open postdoctoral positions in my lab: lopezuribelab.com/join-the-lab/ Some details below👇👇👇

Our new paper on the rapid evolution of centromeres in Drosophila is out! 🚀 Discover how transposable elements and satellite DNAs shape centromere dynamics and drive karyotype evolution over short timescales. @amlarracuente.bsky.social 🌟 Check it out here: journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...

Happy holidays from @tropbiolab.bsky.social! We enjoyed our ugly sweater-themed farewell party for wonderful Elsie and Ferro. Grateful for #teamwasp and #teambird!

I could not be more thrilled to announce the Nature Methods @naturemethods.bsky.social Method of the Year is Spatial Proteomics! Please see our editorial as a roadmap to the fantastic content in this special issue! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

"I mean, it's one grant, Michael. What could it take, three hours?"

I guess I can try #Crustmas! Here’s two female ostracods brooding their developing young inside their marsupium. You can peep their little eyes (black dots) through their own and their mother’s shell. Festively, these females will brood young for ~26 days before they crawl away to grow up 🦀🧪💡🦐

Good morning, please have a nice bug. #invertebrates #BugADay #BugSky

The Biology department at Indiana University Bloomington is recruiting graduate students for this Fall. The deadline to submit applications is December 1st. Bloomington is beautiful 🌲 🌳 🌼 - and full of hiking trails. Come join us! Please spread the word 🦋 🪰🧠🌱🐁🪱🧪🔬
