Like the monopolies, lifee, sorries, etc where it is 90+% luck with barely any decision making contrasted up against things like wargames that are quite opposite made it hard for people to realize the nice middle ground that would lead to renaissance of board games going on now.

I think for the majority of people who do play designer/boutique board games (whatever) you want to call them having a mix of skill and rng is generally important. I think both extremes being present probably did create a mentality that made a large population of people disinterested in board games.
