Cutting things fine, I've just submitted the manuscript for Songs of Seven Dials: An intimate history of 1920s and 1930s London to @manchesterup.bsky.social. Which seems a good moment to notice that the book has made its way into the virtual world. manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526181954/

We need facts as never before. 3 years after Putin invaded Ukraine, I spent 24 hours with combat medics on the Ukrainian frontline. Their courage, compassion, dedication & skill are astounding. Please read & please never stop standing up for Ukraine. 🇺🇦 www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

I recognize the image of this exhibition and love this brilliant response!

Some of you here were kind enough to circulate/sign a petition concerning a friend seeking sick leave from the Boston Public Library. Her story is ongoing, now taken up by Boston city council: www.boston.com/news/local-n...

Reminder that when the Freedom Convoy began, Doug Ford went AWOL snowmobiling in the Muskokas, did little to nothing to support the City of Ottawa as the second biggest city in the province descended into anarchy for 3 weeks, then later refused to testify at the emergencies act inquiry

Great listen about archival journeys and history’s many stories this morning. parolesdhistoire.fr/index.php/20...

The attempt to preemptively shut down a search to hire academics to teach Palestinian Studies, for fear of potential antisemitism, is a deep threat to academic freedom. And I hope everyone criticizing the Trump admin's threats to academic freedom is just as critical when it comes from a Democrat.

Please join us this Friday afternoon!

Such a pleasure to read and think about this book! Plus now I recognized this guy when I saw him at a market!

ahem, the pointless fawning over 'the left that knows it has to be tough on migration to capture voters' imagination'

At the same time York University is suspending admissions to 18 programs, including Indigenous Studies, Spanish, and Gender and Women's Studies the university is paying to have their logo on the court for the Raptors broadcast. Tells you what you need to know about York's priorities.

En 1860 la « petite banlieue » est annexée à Paris. Débute alors la plus grande opération de modification des noms de rues de la capitale. Un travail colossal, sous la surveillance du préfet Haussmann.

I can’t stop thinking about how Larner, Cardiff University VC, described in 2018 her transition into senior admin as bringing her conceptual approach to her engagements with the university — treating the university as “[her] empirical object, if you like” exchanges.warwick.ac.uk/index.php/ex...

What are fallen tyrants owed? What makes debt illegitimate? And when is bankruptcy moral?

This is everything.

I know we’re all used to getting our voter card before voting, but this is a snap election and you may not get it in time! You don’t need it. Go vote! #topoli #onpoli

“the [University Executive Board] presentation’s slide on ‘mental health support’ prompted collective laughter (which was edited out of the official recording)” This is such a grim read. Solidarity with all at Cardiff University

One day, I'll write an article 'Kangaroos and Crocodiles: a Zoology of European Integration' 🙃

Very fun research on 'Vieux Paris'. Well done!

There is some justice in the university suffering some detriment from closing this program. But student claims to the time/expertise of particular professors has already been used to justify larger class sizes, more generic classes, and to require profs to teach/supervise things they don’t want to.

And it affects "climate humanists" too. Researching environmental history takes a toll. Recently I've been writing about the strategies deployed by corporations to stop sustainable legislation and it's hard not to let it affect your mood/outlook on the future. Will definitely listen later.

We’ve just announced our annual online history summer school - a consistently excellent workshop for MA and aspiring PhD researchers! Theme: Environmental Histories. Scholars from early modern, modern, and contemporary history encouraged. Environment broadly understood. www.eui.eu/apply?id=sum...

In the alternate universe of UK university management, it is apparently not contradictory to make staff redundant at the same time as opening a third campus in Asia www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Well, that’s them fucked, then.

"When the state recedes, communes flourish." Kristin Ross is such a wise scholar and this little book gives me hope that regional forms of collective power will grow and flourish as states falter and fade.

Twelve years since Theresa May's heinous Valentine's post that now looks like the sort of thing Labour would put out and the Sensible Grown-Ups would tell us was Very Good Actually.

1/ Happy Valentine's Day ❤️. On this day in 1951, Mr and Mrs Snoddy, their two children and pet tortoise moved into a three-bedroomed flat in Gladstone House, the first residents of the Lansbury Estate in east London.

Probably three times a week, the campus bar did look like this. You could sing Ohhhhh the year was 1778 and someone would join in almost anywhere in Kerr Hall.

Please send us your work!

@eui-history.bsky.social people, bookmark this page biblio.eui.eu/discovery/co... with a selection of new eBooks purchased by @euilibrary.bsky.social it looks good, right? #libraries #history

Egregious.

It ends just as things are getting even MORE interesting but I have loved listening to all the Michelle Perrot podcasts in the past year or so. www.radiofrance.fr/francecultur...

Au programme du podcast dans les prochaines semaines 🤓

Just read Piketty & Sandel’s dialogue on equality. Funny how their distinct national backgrounds create friction. Sandel wants Piketty to talk about identity politics on the left but Piketty doesn’t take the bait. The French thinker rather criticizes Sandel for not writing about taxes and unions.

Scapegoating refugees has always been a deliberate ploy by governments to distract from their own domestic failures. Pandering to Reform UK will backfire — and vulnerable people will pay the price. End dangerous crossings by opening safe routes for fellow human beings instead.
