Pippin painted domestic scenes of everyday Black families, images related to popular culture and a portrait of Black contralto Marian Anderson. His last work, the Park Bench, remained unfinished when he died of a stroke on July 6, 1946, at age 58. /end

One of Pippin’s most intriguing works is Mr. Prejudice (1943), which prominently features the V for Victory logo. A white man is driving a wedge through the V, with a hooded Klansman and a white man with a noose to his right. The figures below are racially segregated. /5

Some of Pippin’s work reflects biblical subjects. His Holy Mountain series (1944-45) depicts a peaceful, idyllic scene but with a background of soldiers, bombs and graveyards. His painting The Knowledge of God includes a tiny brown figure hanging in the trees to depict lynching. /4

In 1920, he wrote four memoirs describing his military service, one of which is illustrated. He later said that WWI “brought out all the art in me.” His first oil painting (The Ending of the War, Starting Home, 1933) depicts the Battle of Sechault, where he was shot in September 1918. /3

When the U.S. entered WWI, Pippin enlisted in the Army and served in the Harlem Hellfighters, the longest-serving U.S. regiment on the front lines. He was shot by a German sniper, suffering wounds to his shoulder and arm that initially cost him the use of his right arm. He was discharged in 1919. /2
