Losing access to US resources is a major blow. But Zelensky probably knew any support from Trump would be half-assed at best. Getting him to show his ass on international TV was a great way to convince Europe to step up and fill in the vacuum left by the US administration.

Turns out Zelensky did have cards, and he forced Russia to show the world theirs.
