When I was a kid we would go for dinner to Tunnel BarBQ for pretty much all family birthdays, & our rule was my Flemish mom wasn’t allowed to answer any questions, because if the agent heard her accent they’d as for proof of citizenship. That got us out of carrying any passports for the family.😂

And while, as a religious studies professor, I vigilantly avoid using terms like “evil” in the classroom, on a personal level I agree that so much in our current historical moment can only be described thus.

This is beautifully put. The statement that you realized as you aged you were destined to play a different roll than you desired is such a profound statement on aging.

I’m kind of relieved he didn’t live long enough to see my smart ass prophesy come true. Now I just hope and pray the Maple MAGAs don’t form government and gut our Social Insurance before I’m eligible to collect in 18 years. 😬

When I took a TT job in Canada, my Silent Generation dad was worried about me losing my SS contributions. Like a true Gen Xer, I looked him in the eye and said “I don’t expect SS to exist by the time I retire, so it’s not a consideration.”

I know it’s not helpful, but it sounds adorable!

Was recently thinking this while re-watching MASH. The surgeons scream at Radar when he comes into the OR without a mask to tell them Henry Blake died. Contrast that to how often surgeons on Greys take off masks and just stand kinda far from the patient. Because social distancing makes ORs safe? 🙄

I guess it turns out that US leadership culture is nothing more than three insipid clichés in a trench coat.

Thank you for livetweeting this, Lindsay! I was teaching and couldn’t attend so this is very helpful. I share ALL your concerns about accessibility. Also, very proud of our RELS major who apparently made a big splash with his questions, because 3 people texted me to say how great he was.

But it is as American as apple pie to blame WOMEN for an abusive man's actions. I'm sick of it. I won't address you directly... I'll just block you. Tired.

Neither HRC nor KDH are directly responsible for Trump. This is abuser logic that is normalized here in the US for some reason. I had my issues & quibbles although I did vote for both. But HRC was not President from 2017-21. KDH is not POTUS. We're here now. Move on! Stop playing the blame game.

I think that’s spot on, actually.

I feel so seen. I’ve never thought much about that say 3 elation, but it is so real!

You don’t need a store discount card, ever, because someone has always, always registered [local area code]-867-5309. I have tested this in 12 states at 40+ stores and it never fails.

SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE, a lot of the resilience you’ll be rewarded for is actually the practice of you learning to betray yourself, deny your own desires, fear complexity, and slowly but surely learn to resent anyone who doesn’t actively work against themselves the way you do.
