It is, I agree. The most obvious choice is The death of Ivan Illych which you probably know. Penelope Lively’s Moon Tiger comes to mind. Anne Tyler’s Noah’s Compass might fit. Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont by Elizabeth Taylor.

It was beyond shameful. He was cornered and bullied and interrupted nonstop. They know very well his English isn’t great and interruptions would make it even harder to get his point across. We saw two extortionists at work.
