I’m actually going to disagree with this one. It’s EXACTLY the same argument that says former smokers don’t get cancer care, or overweight people shouldn’t get cardiac care - “you brought this on yourself” - and all humans deserve care

The good news is i saved you 60 billion dollars. The bad news is that is a typo i saved you 600 dollars and also your plane is falling out of the sky

If only we had a word for a shape with three sides.

I think there's something really wrong with our coalmine canaries. They used to last us for ages, and now they are getting sick and dropping off their perches left, right and centre. They clearly aren't resilient enough. I blame their parents. If a canary can't live in a coalmine, what use is it?

Every safety regulation was written in blood, frequently with a body count higher than one, and it’s not political to put the blame on people who want to “move fast and break things” when they start breaking human lives.

I think this is where the abbreviation VIP reaches its maximum grossness. According to US officials speaking to the newspaper, three American soldiers are dead tonight, but none of them were very important people. It’s a sickening thing to say when you think about it. www.wsj.com/livecoverage...

🧵 Some of you knew me in my "raw milk" era. This overlapped with lots of quips and eye-rolls regarding the lengthy government regulations for, of all things, the sale of cabbage. +

I called my representative today and got a real live person.

This kid slightly misunderstood their homework assignment and we could not possibly love it more. 12/10

Opinion #47 that no one asked for: the golf carts in the airport should not be allowed to drive up behind pedestrians and honk to get out of the way. If you’re not responding to an emergency, you can go the same speed as traffic

Someone once advised me to look to who is more affected by a law or policy. Anti-trans laws do not materially improve the lives of cis people in substantial ways. But the impact on a trans person (and often it really is only a few folks affected) can be major. Hard to see how it's not bullying.

Word of the Day is ‘uhtcearu’ [ucht-kay-aru, with the 'ch' as in the Scottish ‘loch']: Old English for ‘the sorrow before dawn', when you lie awake in the darkness and worries crowd your mind.

Because killing educators and blowing up universities is bad?

An odd addendum

You've been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are trying to rescue you. Who is coming to save you? Oh no

Ok, this is funny as fuck.

for the potato fears not death

No one listens to me about politics and the economy because what do I know But I strongly suspect that part of how people experience “the economy” also includes their projected sense of long and longer term security- and not just how the numbers look now or last year. SO:

I would love to see a bunch of musical artists and celebrities put on a nationally televised tribute concert for Pres. Jimmy Carter on inauguration day with all proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity.

Daily reminder that the underlying purpose of AI is to allow wealth to access skill while removing from the skilled the ability to access wealth.

There’s got to be a math problem here… #ITeachMath

This thread, all of this, what Ann said:

In Alabama we have billboards advertising “Bama’s Best Bud.” Also, we have no-knock raids looking for marijuana that end with dead teenagers. amp.miamiherald.com/news/nation-...

A typical celebration of Hanukkah lights one candle each night (the shamash) and uses it to light the other n candles on night n, for n=1 to 8. How many total candles are lit during these eight nights of 🕎? Compute your answer, add one, then square the sum. #iTeachMath ♾️ #MathSky 🧮

“The secret history of the Mississippi Delta came to be defined by its rich land and poor people, by extreme structural value attached to dirt and a corresponding worthlessness attached to life…” -The Barn, Wright Thompson

Today we welcome Hanukkah — the Festival of Lights. In a time of uncertainty, may this celebration shine a light on brighter days to come. Happy Hanukkah!

Technology was a mistake.

The richest man on the planet could probably solve child cancer himself using less money than he burned destroying Twitter. Instead, he used his influence to strip $190 million from the budget for pediatric cancer research. What a fucking asshole.

Chaos is the cheapest ingredient in a revolution. It takes zero effort to destroy things. To sabatoge, throw a temper tantrum, & burn it all down. Chaos agents are weak & have too vapid of an ideology to build a functional system. Revolutionaries who come only with chaos, come with nothing.

So when mass shootings of average people and school children occurs, it's all "there's nothing we can do, these things just happen" but when a CEO gets shot, we need a special hotline, new safety protocols, and to lock up housewives over frustrated phone conversations. Got it.

“Stop asking why schools don’t have bullet proof glass and metal detectors at all the doors. Ask why schools have to. That’s the question that needs to be asked.” - Police Chief in Madison, WI (where there was yet another school shooting today)

Starting my day with some intentional chaos. Bring it, Monday!
