When you get a critical mass of people who think normalcy isn't coming, things snowball When you get a critical mass of people who decide the government is not legitimate, things snowball So regime incentive is to back down if things approach a breaking point

Trumpism is quite literally the nationalization of the dynamic where public pools were filled with concrete and public schools shuttered rather than allowing integration.

to add to all of that, even Cathy Young called bullshit on this story and he uncritically repeats it

in 1970, the number was 4.4. it jumped to 8.4% in 1980, 11.4% in 1990 and 14.3% in 2000! you can tell a similar story with median household income — large leaps for black Americans post 1970. same with homeownership, in fact.

a thinker as supposedly sophisticated as riley should be able to access some basic statistical information about black americans. like, if you want to use educational attainment as a proxy for class, then from 1940 to 1960 an average of 2.33% of black americans held bachelor's degrees or higher

"we think it is important to engage in dedicated outreach to black professionals because they may bring important perspectives and insights to our business" = not merit "oh look, our entire executive team is white, male and attended the same three colleges but they scored highest on a test" = merit

i also frankly think a lot of you would do well to actually talk to anyone who serves in the guard or who is active duty military, because it's clear to me that these people are mostly an abstraction for you

Phoenix Metro Rail is also completing an extension today, adding several miles of track heading south from downtown to create a new B-Line! The agency projects it will add about 3M new riders per year.

Nonviolent protest can run a huge spectrum between “safe for basically anyone” to “treating chemically burned eyes on a sidewalk” and the biggest factor between those is often organization. I’m not saying anyone shouldn’t protest just be very sure what you’re getting in to.

Addl context there's a faction in DHS who I think believed that they would have "won" in Portland etc if they'd been allowed to go harder and they are rabid for another bite at the apple. Conversely protesters took the lesson from Portland & Minneapolis that you *can* out-escalate the cops and win.

Here they come. Just about the entire Cabinet now issuing statements to raise the temperature and sow disorder & chaos. It’s what they want. The only administration in our lifetimes that seeks to escalate tensions. National Guard now deployed to California.
