We should give single-family homeowners the freedom to build duplexes, triplexes, quadplexes or townhomes on their own properties if they so choose. 🏡

I’m begging the @bostonglobe.com headline writers to please avoid using inaccurate and sensationalized headlines, like this one, that feed local misinformation and hysteria around zoning reform to unlock more housing.

New York City is one of the most congested cities in the world, with the average NYC driver spending 102 hours stuck in traffic in 2024 in what amounts to an estimated $9.4 billion blow to the region’s economy.

Keep an eye out for openings on your local planning and zoning boards as well. Many of them are appointed and have trouble finding enough volunteers to fill the seats! 🇺🇸

250 years ago this week, Salem residents said “no” to being ruled by a King in one of the first armed standoffs of the American Revolution. British Colonel Leslie and his troops were forced to retreat back to Marblehead after a tense standoff with Salem citizens. 🇺🇸

I'm begging headline writers at @bostonglobe.com to please read this piece by @jennyschuetz.bsky.social. The hysteria these headlines create does serious damage to our ability to have rational discourse around serious, nuanced and technical zoning reform efforts. www.brookings.edu/articles/end...

Once complete, Merwede will be a largely car-free neighborhood home to 10,000 residents on a 60-acres. The neighborhood will include parks, shops, restaurants, childcare, offices, sports facilities, a supermarket, schools, a community center & senior center. 📍 Utrecht 🇳🇱

"Missing middle" housing must play a major role in Massachusetts' housing future. Currently the vast majority of the Commonwealth is zoned for single family only, preventing us from right-sizing our housing supply & providing options to meet the varied needs of our residents.

"Decisions that ought, in planning theory, to be debated in comprehensive planning exercises are instead implicitly delegated to project-by-project debate before citizen boards... Because the rezoning process is so onerous, Massachusetts has developed a unique reliance on special permits."

The US spends tens of billions of dollars annually on what is one of the biggest boondoggles, and blights on our communities, in this Nation's history.

Great read by @berkie1.bsky.social on the urgent need for missing middle housing🏘️ in Massachusetts, using the NZA interactive map to visualize how zoning laws hinder the construction of anything beyond single-family homes.

"We must embrace various housing types beyond just single-family homes and large multi-family apartment buildings. We need a housing supply that is affordable, appropriately sized, and capable of accommodating residents at every stage of their lives." www.remainplaces.com/post/we-can-...

66% of people who drive into the congestion pricing zone a few times per week or more support congestion pricing. Three in four voters who regularly drive into the central business district say they experience faster commutes. 📊 @partnership4nyc.bsky.social (2/3/25)

A bill to limit minimum parking requirements statewide passed the WA Senate 40-8 tonight. SB 5184 would limit residential min parking requirements to 0.5 and eliminate them for areas near transit, senior living facilities and small multi-family. www.theurbanist.org/2025/02/06/p...

Elevators are 3x more expensive in the US than in other parts of the World. This drives up total costs, particularly in smaller multi-family buildings. This Washington State bill, which passed the Senate, would bring flexibility to the size & cost of elevators installed in buildings up to 6-floors.

Canada’s largest infrastructure project ever will connect 20 million Canadians between Quebec City & Toronto with 300kmh high-speed rail. A consortium of companies will design, build, finance, operate & maintain the project that will travel between Toronto & Montreal in 3 hrs. 🇨🇦

You can achieve a high density of housing with strong quality of life when you prioritize people over cars and in new developments. Merwede 🇳🇱: 10,000 residents on 60 acres. Culdesac 🇺🇸: 1,000 residents on 17 acres. Assembly Row 🇺🇸: 2,400 residents on 45 acres.

Go Governor Hochul!

We need to organize a protest right fucking now. This is blatantly illegal. Trump has zero authority to do this. Over my dead fucking body.

“Sentiment among the nation’s single-family homebuilders dropped to the lowest level in five months in February, largely due to concern over tariffs, which would raise their costs significantly.” www.cnbc.com/2025/02/18/h...

"While there continues to be a need for further policy reform, MBTA Communities is our first and most substantial attempt to reform 50+yrs of failed housing policy that leaves us in the dangerous position we find ourselves in today" @berkie1.bsky.social 🔗: www.abundanthousingma.org/celebratesjc...

"This is not a left or right issue. I view this as a matter of property rights & free markets being allowed to meet demand, but others might see it as better integrating communities economically while providing more affordable housing. Both are true." www.unionleader.com/opinion/op-e...

Respectfully, Rep. Jeffrey Turco (D), we’ve tried “asking nicely” and offering incentives to suburbs to allow more housing for half a century… It didn’t work, which led to the situations we find ourselves in today in Massachusetts.

“There’s often an overall misconception that new housing is going to hurt your neighborhood or hurt your property values, and that allowing more flexible zoning is going to be the vehicle that drives that.” www-boston-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.bost...

New York's 5th Ave is undergoing a major redesign that will widen sidewalks by 50%, shorten pedestrian crossings, reduce travel lanes from 5 to 3 and add plantings & lighting. The project is projected to pay for itself in 5 years through increased property & sales tax revenue.

“Housing is a place where American families can’t afford a street fight. If we can rally around the solutions we know work, we can make homes affordable for millions of U.S. families. Republicans and Democrats can take the win.” slate.com/business/202...

NYC Congestion Pricing Month 1 🚶‍♀️Foot traffic up 4.6% 🚌 Bus ridership up 6% w/ improved bus times 🚇 Subway ridership up 7% 🚗 Vehicle traffic down 9% ⏰ Drive times 20% - 50% faster 👍 60% of NYC voters want it to continue 👍 66% support among those who drive into congestion zone at least once a week

If you're in Massachusetts, please submit a quick letter of support to the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities to ensure there are no changes to the MBTA Communities Regulations that are being reissued following last month's SJC ruling here; www.abundanthousingma.org/stand-up-for...

The MBTA Commuter Rail’s on-time performance is 92.16%. This is the highest level of reliability in the history of the system.

"We've been surprised how many home buyers are like, yeah I do want to be able to walk to small businesses and a coffee shop… we're also telling the story related to walkability...people actually getting to know their neighbors.” 📍 Houston, TX www.chron.com/news/article...

When some NIMBY tells me the upzones are about “raising more property tax” I unabashedly say “that’s right” and then point out more tax revenue means better funded transit, schools, street designs, and other functioning government programs to help those in meed. They never say shit after that.

Make America healthy again… Make America walkable again. 🇺🇸

Rhode Island has set an ambitious goal of creating 15,000 units of net new housing in the next 5 years. That’s twice as many as the state permitted in the previous 5 years. www.wpri.com/target-12/ho...
