Question: what does a Nazi salute look like to the staff of the New York Times? Follow-up: how does it make you feel in your soul to write something like this?

May deep beauty fuel our activism and our spirits in this dark time.

You know it.

It was an honor to sign the guest book in the home of Anne Frank. I was here as a younger man and thought about her life as a dark chapter of history. Today, I can’t help but think of her story as one of caution. Our world is fragile, and it’s incumbent on us not to break it.

So here’s the thing: I just had one of those moments. Like, particularly the one where you blink and ask yourself after pulling away from the Burgerville drive thru window, “Was that my fairy godmother??” (Maybe you just wouldn’t understand.)

Bless your light. Bless your work. Bless your presence. Bless your power. Bless your pleasure. Bless your healing hands, your delight, your witness, your impact. Even if all you have is 2% left to bring. Even if all you can feel is 2% of your being. It's enough. It's worthy. It's good. -Daje Aloh

The both/and here is important—things are bad in ways that we can’t control on an individual level, and there are things we can do on an individual level to soften the blow for ourselves and our communities. When we despair, we must have actions into which we can pour all of that energy.

Just 99 years ago… When it took much more than a smartphone to document a moment.

Organizing my studio this afternoon and reveling in my jackpot online used book store score: a Brian Doyle autographed copy of The Grail. (It wasn’t advertised as such, it just showed up this way!) Then I tore off the top sheet of my notepad and found a stealthy love note like a buried jewel. 💜

Cinnamon’s like garlic, right? The more the better?

Arguably we are overdue for what is happening now. I think that's why so many communities of color are upset but not spiraling. White people are experiencing our reality. Trust the government? Why? The US government unified to oppress and not much else. Certainly not to progress

It doesn’t have to be this way. 🪵🪻🌳🍁

Correct. If the birthdate field contains corrupt or mismatched data, it defaults to 1875-05-20, which serves as a flag. May 20, 1875, is the day the international standards and metrics treaty was signed. Everything is a conspiracy when you don’t know how anything works.

Bafflingly there are still people out there in the world who think being passionate about nature is “kind of weird”. or “a niche interest”. These people have it all wrong. Nature isn’t some quirky sideline to the main business. It IS the main business.

Today I am going to ponder my personal Rubicon. Maybe you can take few minutes to watch this provoking video, and join me. I think we need to know where the line is and start figuring out what to do. youtu.be/0YFdwfNh5vs?...

This is so exciting to hear! We Portlanders voted to overhaul our form of city governance, and this is the first term with our new district-elected local reps 💚 (Thank you, Candace! Sending love and gratitude from Parkrose Heights.)

I’m so peeved as a landscape architect, let me tell you. (Not to mention annoyed at the article’s mention of his $100 million ballroom idea.)

In a just world this would mobilize the entire country to pick up torches and pitchforks.

Makes my heart light burn a little brighter to read about people with principles.

Leah Sottile is a good egg.

We had the Founding Fathers. Now, the Disassemblist Deconstructionist DOGE Dads. Alpha and Omega males, I guess.

If you live in the PNW, you get your power from Bonneville Power Administration. The workforce is absolutely essential and losing so many people means higher risks during fire season and more delays in restoring power. Call your reps about protecting this agency

My spouse works for Bonneville Power Administration (under the Department of Energy). They just fired another 200 people today. None of their jobs are tax funded. BPA is a remarkable nonprofit model providing efficient/relatively inexpensive power to the PNW. This is a revenge tour not progress.

Happy Valentine’s Day it is incredibly cool and sexy to resist fascism in whatever ways you can ❤️❤️❤️

The alarming ratio of screenshots to actual (beautiful) snapshots in my photos says something about the conditions of the season. And that something is…not lighthearted.

Not exaggerating when I say that the path back is going to be built on people in positions of influence regaining their sense of self-respect. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02...

This week, approximately 200,000 federal workers have been let go.
