Thanks for the summary! Would have been much more productive for 🇨🇦 if CBC had focussed on how we can defend ourselves and become more resilient. For example, drawing lessons from other democracies next to unstable autocracies.👇 And talking to actual experts, not quislings like O’Leary.

💯- good call!

Thanks for sharing - hadn’t seen yet! Related, here’s a detailed look👇 at the white-supremacist + fascist environment (political, cultural, educational, familial) of Musk’s youth in Apartheid South Africa. Grim stuff. It briefly covers his Nazi-loving grandpa, including that 🇨🇦 jailed him in WW2.

… 2) civil society is able to withstand hybrid threats; 3) civil society is able to augment military efforts. Its 100+ recommended measures include more $ for voluntary rescue services, 50% food self-sufficiency by 2030, more conscripts for civil defence, and more emergency shelters. 16/x

…must evolve to meet the new global context. Like 🇫🇮 + 🇸🇪, 🇳🇴 takes a “total” approach - i.e. all levels of government, businesses, other sectors, and civilians have complimentary roles during crises. The White Paper has 3 main goals: 1) civil society is equipped to deal with a crisis or war; 15/x

And in January 2025, Norway 🇳🇴 released its “White Paper on Total Preparedness: Prepared for Crisis and War.” Per the Prime Minister: “We are taking steps to ensure that civil society is equipped to deal with a crisis or war”. Norway recognizes that the era of “deep peace” is over, and plans… 14/x

Like its neighbours, Norway 🇳🇴 recently updated its advice on self-preparedness in emergencies. Reflective of a worsening security and climate context, it urges Norwegians to be able to manage on their own for a week in the event of extreme weather, pandemics, accidents, sabotage, and war. 13/x

It does indeed! Better safe than sorry when survival and sovereignty are at stake.

Totally agree - PP is terrible, and doubly so at this moment of peril for Canada. In case you hadn’t yet seen, check out videos 👇 from @protectingcanada.bsky.social (and give them a follow).

Thanks! Really glad it’s of interest! 🙂 We have a short window to get ahead of events. And even if worst-case scenarios re. US don’t materialize, there’s no downside to 🇨🇦 being better prepared for the inevitable climate, economic and other shocks on the way.

Here’s a bit of background info👇 on BCI + BC Public Sector Pensions Plans.

And there’s precedent for pension funds ditching Tesla - Europe’s biggest pension fund, the Netherlands’ Stichting Pensioenfonds ABP, sold its stake👇in 2024. Time for BCI + BC public sector pension plans to do the same! Apartheid Clyde is beyond the pale. As the Germans say, “Nazis raus”! 2/x
comment in response to post
Indeed. We need to get pension plans across 🇨🇦 to ditch Tesla pronto. For instance, BCI + BC Public Sector Pension Plans👇 have big $$ in Tesla (per latest inventory).

Thank you for your moral clarity, and continuing to stand up for democratic Ukraine, international norms, and human decency! 🇨🇦 must help 🇺🇦 win - we are allies in the global fight vs. fascism. Russia is a terrorist state, Putin is a war criminal, and their western enablers will be damned by history.

The CBC should not be platforming traitors. The CBC should not be entertaining the end of the Nation as if it were a legitimate question. I hate that public money is used this way and wish misery on the fucked up minds that think this is a good idea.

Thanks! 🙂 Agreed it’s hard to believe we find ourselves in this situation. We have a short window to get ahead of events. And even if worst-case scenarios re. US don’t materialize, there’s no downside to 🇨🇦 being better prepared for the inevitable climate, economic and other shocks on the way.

It’s Episode 3 in our somewhat haphazard thread showcasing pension-divestment-related videos! (A niche sub-genre, we know, but nevertheless you’ll still see some A-listers!) This one 👇 is from our 🇬🇧 friends @makemymoneymatter.bsky.social

Yes, lots to learn from the Finns, especially since both their geography and their predicament have lots of similarities to ours!

Very good point. And long pre-dating its latest villainy, FB’s algorithm perniciously promotes outrage, stokes hatred, and inflames divisions. Its contribution to the 2016-17 ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya in Myanmar is well-documented👇, and FB failed to act on warnings at the time.

Indeed. The fascists are working together to defeat Ukraine 🇺🇦, Canada 🇨🇦, and the other remaining democracies.

Agree the situation is dire. Canada needs to become a porcupine, fast.👇

Thank you. 😊 We don’t want this - and we know many Americans don’t either! We’d much rather be friends and partners. But we’ll do everything in our power to remain a sovereign, democratic, compassionate society. And if that means fighting fascists, we will.

Hey 🦋 friends - please watch video👇 and share widely. There is no ambiguity here - fascist Russia is a terrorist state and the world needs to stop buying Russian fossil fuels. We must support Ukraine 🇺🇦 as it fights for survival and defends all of us. @solidarityukr.bsky.social @b4ukraine.org

Very true. And, as other folks have already observed, in both cases we defeated a country controlled by the Kremlin.

Entirely agree it would be wonderful if Fanjoy wins.🙂 Some years ago, we lived there and had the misfortune to have PP as our MP. The one bright moment was when he knocked on our door: he + his minions had to listen to a lengthy critique of his dismal failure to take climate change seriously.

🙂 How’s this for a diagnosis? “It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. It could be that his head wasn’t screwed on just right. But I think that the most likely reason of all May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.”

And here’s episode #2 ⬇️ of the great @protectingcanada.bsky.social video series - this one examines some of petulant PP’s highly-problematic policy approaches. Needless to say, we are not fans of his primitive plans for public pensions!
comment in response to post
Further to the post above, here’s a good video ⬇️ (first in a series) exploring PP’s extreme views and his cavorting with the alt-right. If you’re not worried about this guy being PM, you’re not paying attention. Please share video widely.

💯- They are great allies to have and we should do everything to strengthen ties (same goes for all the other like-minded countries globally).

Indeed - there’s no time to waste! And even if - hopefully - worst-case scenarios don’t materialize in the US, boosting preparedness in Canada 🇨🇦 will serve us well for inevitable climate, economic, and other shocks. No downside to better societal resilience.

🤨 This seems kind of practical and perhaps someone in Ottawa should start gaming this all out.

Sweden’s approach also includes a new national cybersecurity centre to prevent disruptions by hostile actors, and strengthening psychological defence; 🇸🇪 is “working to boost the population’s willingness to defend the country and is focusing on improving resilience and personal preparedness.” 12/x

In late 2024, Sweden🇸🇪 adopted the Total Defence Bill for the period 2025–2030, the “most substantial reinforcement of the total defence since the Cold War”. Importantly, this includes major investments in both military and civil defence (areas like transport, health care, and energy supply). 11/x

In 2024, 🇫🇮 updated its digital brochure “preparing for incidents + crises”, with lots of info on preparedness for: long power + water outages; long disruptions in internet/banking services; natural phenomena like storms + wildfires; and longer-term crises like a pandemic or military conflict. 7/x
