Collider bias is the trickiest one of these—I use this example too: If the true relationship between niceness & appearance is zero but you only look at people you've dated (i.e. adjusted for that collider) you're missing a whole quadrant—the result is wrong and only valid for part of the population

I really liked this idea of using a histogram as a legend in a choropleth map (since land isn't unemployed; people are), so I made a little guide to doing it with #rstats, {ggplot2}, and {patchwork} www.andrewheiss.com/blog/2025/02...

Happy to announce that MEDI, our method to quantify dietary intake through metagenomics is out now. 🧬 🧪🧫🦠 www.nature.com/articles/s42... #metagenomics #microbiome #microbiomesky So what is MEDI? A combination of two things:

🚨🚨🚨 New pre-print alert: "Stable states in an unstable landscape: microbial resistance at the front line of climate change" doi.org/10.1101/2025... Probably the most complex paper I have ever worked on. It took 4 (!) co-first authors to accomplish and literal years to decipher the story.

good news, finally submitted my grant to nsf on Technical biases in quantifying the inclusive fitness of minority alleles under diversifying selection in diverse microbial communities

Happy to share our new paper in @naturemicrobiol.bsky.social on mapping spatial relationships of the human gut microbiome. Very cool. The "carpentered corner" story for the Müller-Lyer illusion is probably bullshit.

Just coincidentally found GenBank Release 84.0 from 1994 in the neighboring lab. Anyone out there with an even older version?

A rare sighting of the elusive semicolon in the title of a paper 😅 ... And an interesting metagenomics dataset as well!

I am thrilled and deeply grateful to share that my latest work has been accepted for publication. 🥳 doi.org/10.1093/isme...

Today we report a new compendium of human gut microbiomes with >168,000 samples By analyzing this massive dataset, we discovered distinct microbiome patterns across the globe, and show we can predict where a person lives just from their gut bacteria Now out in Cell: www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

This paper has been a long time coming: We looked at the genomes of historical bacterial samples over a century to look for trends of antibiotic resistance genes, finding multiple instances of them in infections before the age of antibiotics, but an increase in both frequency and mobility after

I’m very excited to finally share the results of a passion project that has been on my mind for nearly a decade. You can find the pre-print below, but what follows is the saga of how this project came to be:

I'm very happy to report that Matt Schechter's PhD work is now online as a pre-print: "Ribosomal protein phylogeography offers quantitative insights into the efficacy of genome-resolved surveys of microbial communities", www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Here's a little 🧵 about it.

Yesterday, the Baron of Siberia posted my investigation into Tortoise on Twitter. I responded saying the Guardian is cancelling my contract after 19 years, so I'd be happy to go to the Indie to carry on investigating Evgeny's dad, the ex-KGB spy. This was a joke! However, here are some facts.. 1/
