My money's on "good."

Thanks. I'll remember that. :)

Thanks for the additional linguistic knowledge! Though I'm sure your interpretation is correct, it's neat the the poem picks up additional potential readings in the translation process.

I imagine your interpretation is correct! However, just for fun, I'll share my initial impression. I thought that in this poem, Mareez, demonstrating self-awareness, realizes that his suffering is self-inflicted. Everyone he meets is wiser than him, because they haven't chosen to be miserable.

A bit! The tone can get more prosaic or more lyric/mythic depending on the POV character.

& you? Something dragon-y?

Novel! Been working on it for ages. Melancholy, surrealistic children's narrative for adults; convenience stores & orphan girls gone missing; a poem in some of its moods. A goodly number of birds.

I feel Mareez would have a lot of advice for Maggie Cheung & Tony Leung's characters in that movie.

(In the Mood for Love / 花樣年華 is one of my favorites.)

That's the goal for today & tomorrow & the day after.

Lovely. Looked up the title--seems like it shares a name with this Zhou Xuan pop song from the 40s? www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h95... That song also gave Wong Kar-wai's gorgeous, achy film "In the Mood For Love" its original name, meaning "the flowery years." Were you inspired by one of those?

You gave me no choice but to read the whole book. Good decision. archive.org/details/stra...

Gorgeous! Your spouse will lose their mind!

The stars are pretty & I like how they contrast with the "harsh" part of the title.

Just ordered it from interlibrary loan.

This one's wistful. Made me ache.

I hope we get to see a picture at some point (but if it is too personal to post I more than understand)

I feel the same way, but the "antidote" from Mareez is absolutely worthwhile! Excellent angle to position a love poem from, I think.

Wow, I've never seen this! The colors swirling together in the second pic are something magic.

What an intriguing idea. Even if I can't see it live, I hope to at least see photos of the costumes some day. Obviously quite different than your concept, but when I think of dragons + performing arts, my mind goes to dragon dances. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_...

Anyway, neat to see anti-unrequited love poetry from Mareez!
comment in response to post
I think it's prevalent both in popular & unpopular media because art is one of the readiest means available of deriving meaning from unrequited love. You're not going to get love out of your beloved, so you attempt (mostly unsuccessfully) to get it out of the creative process.

"Rebind" is now officially one of the most thoughtful & romantic verbs.

Lily, you're a dream! 💚 The only EO/JP resource I've ever used is Clozemaster, which pulls sample sentences from Tatoeba.

Holy crow! I would use the everloving heck out of an EO/JP dictionary.

I don't know anything about this offering, but I saw someone link to it & remembered that you were working on a medieval detective story: bsky.app/profile/cmro...

Gorgeous! Are the stories mostly Westerns?

It's fun & funky! I was expecting traditional/folk music, but so far there's lots of jazz.

Thanks for the rec! Pretty cover art, too. Listening to it now.

Extremely evocative. I relate to the anxiety. I like that you can read it top-to-bottom (weighed down) or bottom-to-top (lifted up) as well.

Pretty sure Ororo is crying about poverty & drug abuse in Harlem in that issue.

Storm Weeping Over the Children should have been part of every PSA that decade. Warlock, like Plastic Man, is one of those characters who just begs to be used creatively on covers.

Lovely lovely. Bottom left (in glasses) is my favorite. What inspired you to stack three expressions on top of each other?

I hope you find healthy motivation. & I hope you're okay.

The fight choreography in that rings sequence is worth weeping over, it's so pretty.

Gorgeous covers. Interesting subject matter. I'd be interested to know if you'd recommend them after you dip in.
