I am sad to share that all Retirement & Disability Research centers have been ordered to stop work. My fellowship will no longer exist, and the work of so many talented researchers and dedicated staff will be cut short. www.ssa.gov/news/press/r...

Tracks hurricanes, runs medical care that serves millions of people, ensures food safety, keeps aircraft from colliding, issues loans to support small businesses, has a standing army... normal tech company stuff

Keep an eye out for openings on your local planning and zoning boards as well. Many of them are appointed and have trouble finding enough volunteers to fill the seats! 🇺🇸

My latest @npr.org story: Because of a Trump executive order, the Census Bureau is stopping work on statistics that could help protect the rights of transgender people, Robert Santos confirms to NPR in his first published interview since resigning as the bureau's director

Glassdoor data is still very neat

"The agency didn’t have to fire its experts but decided to in the interest of fairness, a top NSF official told staffers" huh???

The @govhealey.bsky.social admin's "Unlocking Housing Production Commission" has submitted their report with a bunch of exciting ideas. Many appear pretty modest, but add up to lots of opportunity across the state. Great thread from @bankerandtradesman.bsky.social digging into the highlights.

Gentle recommendation to have a hobby that you can 1) do on your own time 2) are not doing for livelihood or career 3) can grow your skill in over time, and 4) can focus on for chunks of time where you can tune other things out. I spent a couple hours last night developing film and it was excellent

A trans friend who is rewriting government contracts to comply with executive orders opines "better for me to work on this task than someone who doesn't realize how toxic erasing my existence [and saying that woman need protection from the danger of /being in public/] is, also I just reread 1984"

Almost all grant-review meetings still suspended at the NIH -- the Trump administration is exploiting a loophole to keep a funding freeze in place, leaving researchers in limbo. @maxkozlov.bsky.social reports for @nature.com www.nature.com/articles/d41...

If I posted raw tabulations from the Numident without any disclosure avoidance review I would 100% go to jail for 10 years

This new EO is a doozy, clearly written to test the constitutionality of independent agencies at the SCt. It purports to effectively bring all independent agencies - including the Fed Election Cmsn and the Fed (in part) under presidential control. Irreconcilable w/existing law full stop. /1

If you care about knowing true things about the world and are wondering about death information in the Numident, this figure sums up pretty much everything you need to know (from www.census.gov/library/work...)

You cannot recover from this with future investments The data uncollected are lost forever

NEW: The Trump administration is exploiting a loophole to keep funding frozen at the NIH - a move that some legal scholars say is illegal. Federal Register notices are blocked, so no grant-review sessions can be scheduled. All the gritty details here, and a short 🧵: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Oh wow, study section was back on but just got a new notice that it might be on hold again as “NIH Federal Advisory Committee meeting notices to the Office of the Federal Register are on hold”. This feels like a roller coaster I never signed up to be on.

An important detail that I think gets lost in the madness: Federal workers are categorized as "probationary" when they get promoted. So experts who've worked in government for 10, 20, 30 years are getting indiscriminately cut in the DOGE purge because they got promoted, not because they're new.

It’s a great museum! Show Trump by visiting it for free, Bostonians!

NEW: An example of how a Trump executive order targeting gender identity is affecting ongoing federal surveys can be found in the Survey of Sexual Victimization, which tracks sexual abuse & harassment as required by the Prison Rape Elimination Act LEFT: Form as of Jan. 21; RIGHT: Form as of Feb. 19

NEW: More than 90 groups led by @asa-scipol.bsky.social say in a letter to Congress & OMB that the federal system for producing U.S. economic indicators is "facing severe challenges due to pressing needs to modernize and lack of funds to secure its long-term future" www.amstat.org/docs/default...

I suppose one of the strongest bits of evidence that the Holocene megafauna extinction was caused by modern humans is that there were other interglacials, and of course ranges shifted up and down but there was no megafauna extinctions

The Federal Reserve is not as independent from the executive branch as we’d like to think. The NY Fed just cancelled this Thursday’s @aeacswep.bsky.social reception at #EEA2025 and withdrew from our summer fellowship program. Both support women and underrepresented groups in economics. #EconSky
