Well, the Biology and Development of the Eye (BDE) study section has been postponed (previously scheduled for Thurs/Fri). I’m very disappointed on behalf of the applicants and reviewers, who all want this meeting to happen. I’m also grateful to the NIH staff who work so hard to make science happen.

Reminder that NIH grants are NOT reckless spending. They are extremely competitive. The mean success rate of all grants is <24%. Far lower for R01's that are the lifeblood of most academic labs. All the data can be found here: report.nih.gov/funding/nih-...

🤞 that things get started again as soon as possible…

Thank you, @slcmayor.bsky.social, for standing up for research funding here in Utah!

Welcome @vikkiweake.bsky.social! Glad that you’re here!

NEI Council meeting for February 21 has been "posponed"

Thanks for the info from reviewers... All 8 CSR study section meeting scheduled today have been cancelled (due to the Federal Register announcement issue). Some reviewers are finding out that their meetings are cancelled when they are notified by the travel agency that their tickets are cancelled.

A large portion of grants awarded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health cannot be funded for the foreseeable future because of an indefinite hold on submissions to the Federal Register, according to an email reviewed by The Transmitter. By @avaskham.bsky.social bit.ly/3X8ngz8

Early registration, abstract submissions, and workshops proposals are all open for the 19th IZFC! Be sure to review the key dates and deadlines on our website for early registration and submissions! www.izfs.org/education/19...

Yet another heartbreaking and short sighted decision. The folks at NSF are so supportive of the scientific community. Their funding is what has allowed my lab to grow and succeed. These cuts are so destructive.

I don't see a cancellation note anywhere but I would be surprised if it met. We'll see...

Truly heinous outcomes for exceptionally talented early career folx

Unthinkable damage to one of the world’s best science institutions 🫠😢. Just insane because it was so unnecessary and done with no thought or plan. Awful for everyone in science but heartbreaking for those who were just fired for no cause.

The trickle of updates of colleagues and friends purged is heartbreaking. Many of the POs and SROs that I know that joined in the last year were faculty that closed their labs and left positions to serve the country's scientific mission.

ATTENTION (PARTICULARLY NIHers) If anyone has information about the numbers and types of folks in your institute, center, office, or whatever who were were terminated, please share them with me by DM or on Signal (jeremymberg.78). I am putting together an inventory.

They are absolutely cutting science! Folks in the NIH intramural program are gone. Folks in extramural programs. These include PhD and MD scientists who help make NIH function as a granting agency. They are depict this as cutting easily replaceable bureaucrat. There aren't many of those at NIH.

ATTENTION (PLEASE SHARE) If anyone has or knows of any positions that might be appropriate for the NIH staff members who were terminated, please post the information in this thread. There are lots of talented and accomplished people who may be looking for new opportunities.

I am deeply grateful to the extremely hard-working and dedicated staff at the NIH and NSF. Thank you to all of the Program Officers, Scientific Review Officers, Grants Management Specialists, and so many more, who have made the engine of US science and innovation run.

Status: Thinking of how I can be of service to all the peeps at NIH and NSF who have had their lives turned upside down this week. For those companies and institutions around the world looking for talent, this is an opportunity for you and them. Will look for matchmaking opportunities.

Termination notices going out this afternoon to more than 300 employees of the National Cancer Institute. Access likely ends today. Four weeks paid leave and that’s it. Strong power move for Team Cancer.

What I have heard is that IC directors (and perhaps other highly ranked folks in each IC) will be asked to submit letters of resignation, BUT THESE WILL NOT NECESSARILY BE ACCEPTED. This is what had me so alarmed all day yesterday. 1/n

This is terrible. These are scientific experts - PhDs - who are essential for the functioning of our nationwide scientific enterprise.

Despite court orders, the NIH is still frozen.

Another great script from @ascbiology.bsky.social, emphasizing that these cuts to science will not only affect our actual health and eminence in science but will have ripple effects on the economic health of our communities.

Just saw that Mike Lauer is stepping down as director of extramural research. A steadfast supporter of the NIH scientific mission. Call your representatives. www.statnews.com/2025/02/13/n...

They're now cancelling key meetings at the NIH to give the green light for future cancer research
