kotaku was profitable for almost its entire pre-G/O existence, raking in 20-40 million unique visitors a month on a relative shoestring budget (6-15ish people, vs competitors with dozens or even 100s of staff).

a lot of people still don't really get that games journalism isn't writing features or personal essays about why games are special. it's largely a lot of yeah, boring work like writing well-researched guides, tracking sources for years to report pieces, and stuff. writing=/=journalism=/=influencing
