Impeachable offense on the part of Trump

Just early published in ARPS (open access) @garlicksauce.bsky.social @wmjunk.bsky.social & I survey remarkable recent lobbying research that shows how lobbying matters & whats ahead for studies of influence www.annualreviews.org/content/jour...

The Constitution states only one command twice (in 5th and 14th amendments) - that no person shall be “deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law." For a group that reveres the Constitution’s literal words so much… seems important.

Oh my god you want me to find "evidence" before putting someone in jail? Every time?? Do you have any idea how long that would take

*Fantastic* use of polling

Restoration of the famed "Lucy the Elephant" house in Margate NJ has been defunded. www.nj.com/atlantic/202...

A lot of Americans, especially wealthier ones, believe they know how to weather recessions and even take advantage of them to improve their positions but nobody and nothing can survive the collapse of the dollar unharmed. This is going to be unlike the lived experience of any American under 100.

Good morning. A reminder that historically when the US has wanted to punish other countries, it imposed sanctions on them, cutting their people off from global trade, hoping to create enough economic havoc that they rein in their leaders. Trump has imposed economic sanctions on the American people.

New paper on misperceptions out in PNAS @pnas.org www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... Why do people overestimate the size of politically relevant groups (immigrant, LGBTQ, Jewish) and quantities (% of budget spent on foreign aid, % of refugees that are criminals)?🧵👇

See ya, MPSA and Chicago. It was fun. A highlight among many this weekend: the lemon-pistachio old-fashioned donut from Stan's.

Can we get more of this? “The Japanese American National Museum will ‘scrub nothing,’ Fujioka said, and instead will highlight the importance of DEI. “Our community is based on diversity, equity is guaranteed to us in the Constitution, and inclusion is what we believe in,” Fujioka said.

The 2020s: pandemic to flourishing economy to depression in half the time it took 'em back in the 1920s. Just goes to show you what you can accomplish when you really put your mind to it.

The re-institutionalization of Congress has to be a priority. We’re in this mess substantially because Congress has intentionally absented itself from so much policymaking.

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive. No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief. 1/ A 🧵 to explain his plan and how we fight back.

Anyone else braving air travel today or tomorrow just so they can stand very awkwardly in the Palmer House lobby and question their life decisions?

This letter could have read: We agree with the administration that antisemitism, like all bigotry, is a major problem in the United States, including at Harvard. We ask the president to make substantial progress combatting antisemitism by firing those who are antisemitic in his administration.

I think this is spot on. But why? People in elite institutions - in law, business, academia, and politics - are "elite" in a large part because of their 1) ambition (and willingness to sacrifice other goals to their career goals), and 2) talent for working the system to advance their interests.

We have meaningful resistance from the grassroots and the states, but our “elite” institutions are rolling over and showing their bellies. It seems to me a lot of elite universities and law firms stand for nothing other than their own prestige 1/2

As this horrifying practice of detaining international students expands, let’s be clear: the “antisemitism” students are being arrested for is really criticism of Netanyahu’s government. That’s it. Jailing people for criticizing a govt and calling it antisemitism is a Christian nationalist ploy.

California needs to put on its big-boy pants and function as liberal democracy's fortress for as long as the chuds hold DC. To do so, it'll need to clone essential federal services. But to fund all this, it needs to build more housing and it needs to kill GOP tax schemes like Prop 13.

Innocent people — undesirables, political dissidents — are being sent to camps here and abroad. A scapegoated minority is being persecuted, made an example of. Wrongthink is being stricken from government institutions and civil society. There is no more "if" authoritarianism arrives. It's here.

Democratic Leaders Stand Real Still In Hopes No One Notices Them

that isn't what the golden rule says!

@ryanenos.bsky.social is absolutely right here: open.substack.com/pub/ryandeno...

OK, a roundup response to the "they won't follow the court orders" people. First of all, you're wrong! The administration *is* following many of the court orders. What's more, they're showing their understanding of the validity of court orders by seeking stays pending appeal when they lose.

As markets plummet again today from Trump's chaotic economic policies, ask yourself: Why would billionaires back policies that tank their own stock values? It’s the taxes. I wrote a step-by-step explainer of how billionaires avoid paying taxes. People are often surprised when I explain it.🧵

Now that the influential bigot who did a Hitler salute publicly claimed that organic protests against his malfeasance are secretly controlled by a list of foreign Jews, some of whom aren’t even alive today, are we allowed to call him a Nazi, or is there something even Nazier we have to wait for?

Consistent problem for infrastructure, but also technology contracting, and regulation also: cut backs on in-house capacity allow private actors to take advantage. Classic penny-wise, pound foolish move. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/what-resea...

NOTE: The opponents of DEI are purging anyone who is not a white man from military leadership This is not about merit; it’s about normalizing racism and misogyny

To review: Putin's intelligence service hacked the DNC email system in '16 to help Trump. In '16, Putin offered Trump a Moscow building development deal. Trump’s '16 campaign chair, Paul Manafort, was in business with a Russian intelligence officer. Those are just the things in the Mueller report.

Yes! So are public threats and bullying. Strong leaders get other people to see that it is in their interest to do what the leader wants.

I feel like this could actually have an impact.
