If your law is good when there are good people in office, but dangerous when there are bad people in office, your law is bad.

NEW: WaPo has a letter we organized from thousands of LGBTQ ppl (including prominent artists like @lillywachowski.bsky.social @kathleenhanna.bsky.social @rosemontoya.bsky.social) telling politicians: DON'T COME TO PRIDE if you support censorship bills like KOSA www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Senator @blumenthal.senate.gov, who has repeatedly backed deadly bills like SESTA/FOSTA, the EARN IT Act, and KOSA that are opposed by LGBTQ and human rights groups: "The LGBTQ community is under attack." www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

This is a really big deal. Two years ago, Sen Blumenthal staff held closed-door meetings with a handful of LGBTQ groups who then went "neutral" on #KOSA, while dozens of other LGBTQ groups continued to oppose it. KOSA supporters repeatedly twisted this to claim all LGBTQ concerns were addressed.

Oh, NOW the mainstream LGBTQ lobby is finally paying attention to KOSA after solidly ignoring the EFF and sex work organizers' campaign showing how this bill would hurt kids, even in its watered down form. FFS

New: Momentum is building for a major kids online safety bill, with parents of victims rallying on Capitol Hill yesterday. But LGBTQ+ activists raising new alarms over its potential for abuse, telling lawmakers who back it to "stay home" from Pride events. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

What people need to understand about the internet is payment processors are the biggest censors on the planet

The European Commission must once and for all abandon the ghost of data retention that’s been haunting EU policy discussions for decades, and shift its focus to rights respecting alternatives.

On Wednesday, Brazil’s Supreme Court resumes its analysis of the liability digital platforms have for user content. The most likely outcome is worrisome. Here’s why:

🚨🚨🚨 CBO: " #MAGAMurderBill will kick 8.2M ACA enrollees off their coverage!" Wakely Consulting: "Hold our beer." New white paper projects up to *~14 MILLION* losing ACA exchange or BHP coverage between House GOP budget bill + IRA subsidy expiration: acasignups.net/25/06/24/mag...

Here we go. The UK Board of Film Classification (BBFC) says it has a study showing that 80% of “adult pornography users” want greater censorship. They do not link the study.

“We’re gonna fall behind China!” Yes, we’re falling behind, in protecting creative industries and upholding IP law 🤷🏻‍♀️

JUST RELEASED: @ryancassata.bsky.social dropped a new protest song about resisting LGTBQ censorship bills like KOSA that’ll destroy queer spaces + vital health resources online.

【ROARING】

Oh wait I actually have Sonic art to post for Sonic's birthday this year!! AND Sonic Adventure 2 came out this day worldwide so technically its kinda also Shadows's birthday.

We gotta get back to calling our representatives tomorrow with 5calls.org, for this and everything else that’s happening right now 💀 Because it cleared hurdles, yes, but support for this is shaky (even for some Republicans) and with enough continued outrage we CAN sink this ridiculous proposal!

we need to get aggressively pro-porn. no half measures. if they didn't want that they shoudn't have forced us to. the happy compromise we had is gone and it's their fault

The idea that War on Porn will only have positive outcomes! That it will only target "bad" stuff, that it doesn't require broad digital surveillance, or suppression of sexuality, or that it won't be turned against marginalized people. The same absolute hubris of these people.

"This idea — that porn is now hurting men at a significant scale — has been embraced by a variety of right-leaning and anti-woke influencers who have helped push the anti-porn movement beyond conservative circles." We should talk about this more.

Trump’s decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers. His reckless and illegal actions have endangered American lives at home and abroad.  This is grounds for impeachment. Call your MOCs: 202-224-3121

"The cable ... contained a threat to student visa applicants if portions of their social media accounts remain 'set to private' during their interviews."

And it's the same set of people who want to "protect children online" The reality is they don't care about kids. Neither on- or offline, they are just a pawn - cheap labor - good excuse to identify all internet users - censor LGBTQ+

Please don't conflate decriminalization of sex work with legalization of sex work. We push for decriminalization instead of legalization because legalization leaves vulnerable people beind. Anyone who can't meet the legal requirements to work is still criminalized and still at risk.

Oh boy, Comcast and AT&T and Verizon and the rest will absolutely *love* that. Most "broadband funding" ends up being largely ineffective giveaways to telecom, so Cruz is essentially threatening to shut off the spigot for the sake of an entirely different industry. Begun, the lobbyist wars have.

Pride month is still in full swing. Tell lawmakers if they support bills like KOSA that’ll harm LGTBQ+ communities they can’t pride with us! No pride 🌈 in censorship: Fftf.link/cantpridewithus

what the fuck is wrong with them

Fewer than half of Americans think that requiring IDs to access adult content is an effective solution for preventing access by minors. Just 18% say it will be very effective. today.yougov.com/topics/polit...

Canadians, Mark Carney ran on a platform of keeping Trump's tiny hands off our country, and preserving our freedoms. But his bill C-2 is basically the start of a Canadian version of the US Patriot Act, including warrantless seizures of browsing data and physical mail, sharing of such with the US...

“I propose that the kind of hope we need is not that things will get better but rather the commitment to finding meaning and connection and beauty all around us.” “I don’t know what that future is going to look like, but I know you’re not going to face it alone. www.scarleteen.com/read/culture...

The true reason why the drive-through lines are so long

“People want safety, but they don’t necessarily want more policing and surveillance,” EFF’s @mguariglia.bsky.social told The Bar Association of San Francisco’s San Francisco Attorney magazine. “Police are not elected, and should not be able to buy equipment without public consent.”

And all the well-funded anti-trafficking groups just howled, right?… Right? …

Australia: “Teen social media trial isn’t testing some ways kids will get around the [social media age verification] ban” | @crikey_news https://alecmuffett.com/article/113533 #AgeAssurance #AgeEstimation #AgeVerification #SocialMediaBan #australia #censorship

Gee. The same thing many of us have been saying for years keeps proving true. Age verification tech doesn't work. Yes, vendors insist it works fine. But they're trying to sell. And governments (and some activists) keep falling for it.

Stop CSAM + the Take It Down act are two of many bad internet bills that are a threat to privacy and free speech for anyone the government doesn’t like. Make some noise about them: www.badinternetbills.com

There’s a thing called the politician’s fallacy that explains a lot about congressional dysfunction. Here’s why this is especially tricky when it comes to tech + free speech: touchgrass.fightforthefuture.org/congress-rem...

Pope Leo is making the potential threat of AI to humanity a signature issue—challenging a tech sector that has spent years trying to cultivate the Vatican as an ally.
