If those assholes had had courage then, we wouldn't be in the even worse situation now.
And I imagine very few of them are even registering that.

For generations to come, groundskeepers at the graveyards where Trump and Musk are buried will have to come in early every day to clean up all the forks that are put on their tombstones.
Also, the smell of urine will be OVERWHELMING.

I do agree with that -- some things he's doing deliberately, like targeting all the departments that have investigated him, but so much of the rest is just malicious incompetence set loose. This isn't a social media site or a startup -- people are going to actually die because of what he's doing.

Between Musk's money promising to primary anyone who dissents, plus Trump's very real ability to call a mob down on people, they are terrified. But, still. I don't know how you can watch what has happened in just a month and allow it to continue.

That's what I truly don't understand. Six congress members and four senators is all it would take. They walk up, say that they are no longer Republicans, but Reagan Republicans, switch to Independent, caucus with Democrats. They could get their favorite assignments and allow real checks.

Seriously. Once you let DOGE in, how can you prove that documents weren't tampered with? This is going to be a massive windfall for the richest, who can use their armies of lawyers to use this as a way to weasel out of paying. As Musk surely intends.

Yeah. Pretty grim. I'm filing a whole month earlier than I usually would, and I'm just sitting here thinking, "what's the point? Musk already has his hand in the till at the IRS."

It's a fantastic essay, Cherie. I'm so sorry that we're in the shitty situation that caused you to write it, and I really, really hope that your family and all the others get through this okay.
