The US is traditionally a politically defined nation (support for the constitution etc.) whereas the UK has not been viewed that way, either because it is not a political nation or it’s not a nation.

I am interested if there is data as to much the basis upon which people identify as English has changed eg over the last 30 years or so. My guess is a lot. Also, Englishness has become much more clearly delineated identity from Britishness, more culturally rich. It may be easier to identify with.

Honestly, I feel for people who have to decide what the biggest news line is here.

Going in as 1 state would be a very bad negotiation from Canada. 10 provinces; 10 states.

Same thing happened with Norah Jones.

Bonfire of the regulations has always been unrealistic.

When you get into the detail, much EU policy was fine although in many cases it could have done with some piecemeal tinkering and liberalisation (which the EU does itself). UK has limited powers to amend onshored EU regs. It either has to repeal and replace with new laws or leave largely as is.

So the UK has set the high water mark of these EU regulations in aspic. The Rees-Mogg etc talk of repealing all of this was always so much eye wash. Big policy change in these areas is hard and requires genuine engagement with detail. 6/

Further , there are limited powers to amend onshored EU law. So UK has been left with more onerous versions of EU regulation from which the EU has moved on. But where UK finds it hard to make piecemeal improvements without a wholesale policy review, which is likely to be contentious. 5/

UK has not done any of this, for understandable reasons. In these areas, for businesses there is a huge value in following a common set of standards. So there is a high bar on support for wholesale policy revision. And under last govt, you could not simply say to them UK should just follow EU 4/

Take financial services as an example, since the end of the Brexit transition, the EU has liberalised and simplified MiFID to support growth in response to Covid (Quick Fix Dir) updated EMIR (EMIR3) in ways that are liberalising (NFC+ thrhld) and protectionist in others (active acct requirement) 3/

The issue has been most acute in those areas where the EU already had established laws which the UK had either implemented in domestic law or onshored under the European Union Withdrawal Acts. 2/

In Britain, over the years we had seen lots of history grads in government saying telling voters to send their children to scientific or applied/ vocational courses, when you full expect their own children will be studying traditional humanities.
