Fell off a cliff. Swam with sharks. Dined with hitmen. Hung out with crime bosses. Bought and sold a ton of drugs. How the heck am I still here? DFIR USMC 🚓

Those are key points. I know the feeling of sitting in a class, using an outdated textbook, with software demos in the book that wasn't even used anymore.
I've also sat in classes where we replicated what someone just posted in a blog...like, hot off the press.
Two totally different experiences.

Today's minimum standards are, by default, already a BS in a CS-related field and an MS in DF/IR. We must stop selling the BS "cyber" degrees as the standard to get hired. A BS should be acceptable, but it's not.

Then again, this was the same agency that had an unescorted cleaning crew copy multiple cases on desks and disclose the investigations to the targets....

Do not mess around the bathroom escorts. I happened to need to make a head call, walked away from my "escort" for 15 seconds into the restroom, and 10 seconds after that, she came running in after me because "I couldn't be left alone on the floor."

Tools (blue pill) are essential for efficiency, but an investigative mindset (red pill) is what ensures accuracy and depth. Ignoring either would definitely be madness!

People think an army of police are driving around their community every minute of the day and are at their beck and 911 call.
Truth is, you're fortunate if you have 3 patrol officers per 1,000 residents (ex: Seattle is 1.3 officers per 1,000 residents).
Expect no one to come to save you.

It's happened several times before, where orgs were created that came up with recommended guidelines.
The same organizations (and others) can come together again to now decide upon the required guidelines.

Whether we realize it or not, each case/matter/incident requires that we:
1) Use a tool, or
2) Be a tool.
