I wonder how much of this is due to credit cards. My granny grew up poor: no credit, knew how to stretch potatoes and flour. My parents were poor but with credit. They drove up debt to not look poor.

Yes and while I think OP is acting in earnest good faith here, I think indulging - rather than pushing back on - those retrofitted (and therefore basically false) explanations does a disservice to anyone (including the people professing those false beliefs) attempting to analyze what is going on.

I found it interesting how when she started to get attention/money, she would say that she'd likely be killed for truth-telling, and yet she spent the new money on house upgrades and trips, not seeking safety.

This state had been looking hopeful for a minute, but apparently everyone outside of a city wanted to drink forever chemicals, have defunded schools, and lose hospitals each year. May their dreams come true.
