Can anybody share this article? Does The Economist share articles like The Atlantic?

This is all good and well. But Trump voters think it’s 4D chess to bring back mfg and the ExternalRS. What’s the counter message? Besides tariffs are dumb. History lessons don’t work either. I’m at a loss.

With answer in hand they could explain finer points of free-trade. Be more aggressive w/ re-training efforts. “Learn to code” is condescending but optimistic “You can re-train we’ll help” is better. Essentially, MAGA is saying “back to the factories with you and your kids you fucking idiots”

If every time JD said “oh we gotta tariff to bring back factories” Dems said “that’s dumb we should just do X” collectively, consistently, everywhere, and always.

I understand comparative advantage, specialization, and export oriented industrialization. But it’s a tough sale to people. I feel dems need a simple message to push back with. Even if it’s just messaging.

Gotcha. I don’t watch much news. Just still struggling with how such economically ignorant policy/ messaging is winning the day esp in the podosphere. I wish dems could elbow into spaces with good simple messaging. I.e. there are other ways to incentivize dom. Mfg. w/o isolating ourselves. It’s mad

Not commenting so much on the economics of it, but the messaging. Trump et al get away with saying mfg will benefit from tariffs like it’s a law of nature. Why isn’t anyone saying anything other than tariffs are dumb? They are dumb, but a simple effective counter message would be helpful to dems.

This was misunderstood. I was asking what simple alternatives to dumb tariffs could be used to bring back manufacturing. And if there are, and maybe even if there aren’t, why aren’t the opposition beating Trump over the head with it, now or ever. Not a Trump supporter. I want dems to fight harder
comment in response to post
Unrelated: Is using tariffs the only way to bring back domestic manufacturing? Could we use tax incentives/ other means? Tax imported goods with higher sales tax, cut sales tax on domestic. Why is destroying goodwill the only way? Why aren’t dems saying that? Or am I dumbass, and this is happening?

How many of the original minuteman silos are still operational?

How far along are we on updating our arsenal since the 80s? Are some still operating on floppy disks?

On the shoulders of individuals. You can’t remake institutions. Remake your own. Simplify, unplug, purge, check out of the rat race, check-in to therapy/rehab, be brave. Then rebuild. I’ve watched me do it.

Sure. But, I don’t think telling people they’re fucked is helpful. My advice, as someone who pulled out of the ptsd/addiction spiral, would be to not read this article. America is having a crisis of meaning. Not much daylight b/t Radical Islam, Conspiracy Mind Virus, & WMV. Some part of this falls

I don’t know you @radiofreetom.bsky.social but the way you use phrases like, “holy cannoli”, unironically, seems very on brand, and makes me smile a little.

I prefer trash over a “cookie” containing oatmeal and raisins. Maybe it’s me….

Do raisins belong in anything?
