Per Edgar Apanco’s reporting, Mexican cinema raised 10 million dollars in the domestic box office in the first 55 days of the year. Probably a record, very encouraging, slowed by the stupid Captain America movie wiping out many of these films out of screens while they were still drawing audiences

Farm workers sent us this pic from where they were pruning apple trees in upstate NY. Temps at 11am were 25° and felt like 4°. They shared that it was windy and the ice was slippery. They got a break every 2 hrs where they went to their personal car to try to defrost. #WeFeedYou

FORMA's "State of the Field" Debate series has launched! In the first set of "position papers," Ignacio López-Calvo and Mark Anderson examine the sets of subdisciplines comprising the field. Read more at www.formajournal.org/debate

"When strangers reside with you in your land, you shall not wrong them. The strangers who reside with you shall be to you as your citizens; you shall love each one as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt." (Leviticus 19:33-34)

Me gusta la historia porque me gusta la ciencia ficción. El pasado y el futuro son dos territorios desconocidos: tenemos ideas aproximadas sobre ellos, pero siempre rebasan nuestras nociones preconcebidas

Trump deported 200 Colombians. None were criminals. It's critical that we publicize this and counteract the propaganda.

My book, Caribbean Inhospitality, considers what Caribbean literature, film, and digital culture can tell us sovereignty and belonging, especially in our current global crisis. I start with the Caribbean’s violent origins as a place of hospitality to strangers and look to the present.

What do you call a case of Pellegrino that has been sitting in a freezing garage for a month? 🧨 a) a dry Molotov b) a Pellegri-no-no c) a huge mess of shattered green glass and ice

are there any Latin American Studies and/or Mexican Studies scholars on here who have seen Emilia Pérez and would be interested in writing a very short blurb on it (ideally/specifically wrt the film's representation of Mexico) for Mid Theory? if this is you get in touch w me!

I'm pretty sure that no contemporary writer can best Hollinghurst at the sentence level. Insane ✨

If you like pop latino and haven't listened to Angélica Garcia's album "Gemelos," you are missing out! So good ✨

Stellar infographic that explains how recycling steel produces a toxic byproduct dust. This dust is shipped by American steel plants to Monterrey, where it is further processed to reclaim zinc, which pollutes the air. This is how environmental racism works. www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...

An Alabama mom hit by the Bourbon Street attacker's truck then shot in the attack, who still has a bullet lodged in her foot, told a @nolanews.bsky.social reporter that the Amazon warehouse where she works denied her request for a leave of absence.

For Christmas I gave myself the supremely nerdy gift of a subscription to the Berliner Philharmoniker Digital Concert Hall. They live stream their weekly concerts and the production value is insanely good. If you are a classical music fan, I highly rec. www.digitalconcerthall.com/en

Viridiana still slaps. Love that Buñuel wrote his own foot fetish into the script 👠

Fascinating novella of a monologue given by the Iranian curator at the opening of a museum dedicated to the sounds of torture. The museum is not a monument to victims, but a celebration of torture and torturers. Disturbing and riveting exploration of how the state appropriates forms of critique.

My 97 year old grandma bedazzles belt buckles in her free time -- I know, so Texas. Here's a small sample of this year's buckle display 🤩

Snowbow! 🌈

The trip hop band Massive Attack turned down Coachella for environmental reasons (it's in a desert, requires flying). They helped fund a study abt how the industry can emit less carbon, & shifted to shows powered by renewables, w ticket sales that prioritize locals. pitchfork.com/news/massive...

Mariah Carey voice: It's timeeee... for the annual NEH rejection email! 💫💅🎁

Great postdoc opportunity in Latin American studies at UPenn!

"Though many politicians believe that halting existing or new fossil fuel production is politically unpopular, there is surprisingly limited data to back this claim...we conducted a nationally representative survey." guess what @cplusc.bsky.social found? climateandcommunity.org/research/vot...

My fave resource for any EH class is the website BANANA CRAZE, w dozens of artworks abt banana cultivation & politics. This semester my students went crazy for Jean-Francois Boclè's "Tears of Bananaman," a body made of bananas that slowly decomposes 🍌 bananacraze.uniandes.edu.co/language/en/...

Mark Haber's latest novel LESSER RUINS is fab. Propulsive stream of consciousness of an aggrieved academic who can only come up with titles instead of producing any actual writing. Bitter and funny meditation on how grief slips in and out of daily rants and meanderings, evasive and pervasive.

I'm sitting on some spare copies of my first book, "Colonial al-Andalus" (Harvard UP) and would love to find a good home for them. If you'd like one (especially if you're a graduate student or junior scholar), please drop me a line, and I can mail the book to you.

Muy contenta de que la traducción al inglés de mi libro, hecha por Chris Andrews, esté de finalista del premio Valle Inclán de traducción junto a estas otras hermosas obras! societyofauthors.org/prizes/trans...
