This is a fucking excellent thread not just about Star Wars but about storytelling in general: your audience’s imagination is more powerful than the strict worldbuilding and over-explanation that the franchise-ification of everything has rendered mainstream

thinking about 1000xresist and not getting why people think it should have just been a visual novel. like in part it’s a story about diaspora and belonging and especially places and having this physical space we can navigate and the switch-ups of how we navigate it is so crucial to me

THIS. GODDAMN IT, THIS. YOU MUST BE BAD AT SOMETHING BEFORE YOU CAN BE MEDIOCRE. YOU MUST BE MEDIOCRE BEFORE YOU CAN BE FINE. YOU MUST BE FINE BEFORE YOU CAN BE OKAY. OKAY BEFORE GOOD. GOOD BEFORE GREAT. ETC. To have great artists, we have to support every OTHER stage of artist.

Now THIS is a syllabus #booksky #blackbooksky www.aaihs.org/the-sinners-...

I know a lot of people who could fall for this, and it might have been me if I hadn’t seen this thread.

I keep catching strays from "technology is neutral" people, so let's set things straight. 1) Technology is not neutral, especially the subset of technology called "algorithms" 2) The form-factor that makes a technology into a tool is not neutral 3) How tools are productized is not neutral [rant]

I do genuinely wonder how many people think what happened with Wikipedia is that “society accepted it” rather than that they put a ton of work into making it reliable, something that is not going to make AI reliable because no technology to actually understand meaning has been or can be invented.

The mods of r/ChangeMyView shared the sub was the subject of a study to test the persuasiveness of LLMs & that they didn't consent. There’s a lot that went wrong, so here’s a 🧵 unpacking it, along with some ideas for how to do research with online communities ethically. tinyurl.com/59tpt988

I’m glad so many people have found my “capybara method” for how to write alt text and image descriptions helpful! However, I know conflicting access needs exist and not everyone can write their own #AltText, so here’s an ongoing thread of tools that can help. Inclusion in thread ≠ endorsement

So I can't help but notice that all this brouhaha about single sex spaces and trans exclusion from them is eliding the axiom underlying the panic. Namely: taking the normalization of men's violence against women as a given that cannot be meaningfully ameliorated except through sex-segregation.

Shelly-Ann racing in her kid's Parents Day race at the school is the funniest thing I've seen all week LMAO

Ok look, I hype up games but when a game gets nominated for a Nebula Award, a Hugo Award, and a Peabody Award, like that right there tells you have amazing, stellar storywriting in that game. Please check out 1000xRESIST!

1. LLM-generated code tries to run code from online software packages. Which is normal but 2. The packages don’t exist. Which would normally cause an error but 3. Nefarious people have made malware under the package names that LLMs make up most often. So 4. Now the LLM code points to malware.

I've seen some people saying how "AI"-generated text is now as good as certain published authors, and honestly I think it's really brave for these folks to admit in public how poor their reading comprehension has to be

heads up horror devs, i bothered to look up the eternal darkness sanity system patent and apparently it expired in 2021 go wild patents.google.com/patent/US693...

also it is extremely funny/telling that this Heritage-backed TERF org have posted the questions Last Week Tonight researchers sent them—which mostly serve as more evidence that those researchers really are prepared and professional: womensliberationfront.org/news/last-we...

"Age verification" laws are actually "upload your ID or get your face scanned to access every website, ending anonymity and associating your identity with everything you do online" laws and if more people understood that they would not be down for this authoritarian nonsense

Sometimes I think of the meme just a couple minutes too late

I’m seeing a lot of negative reviews on games along the lines of “this isn’t exactly what I wanted, even though it was exactly what was promised”. I can’t overstate how much more joy you will have if you allow art to unfurl in front of you, instead of demanding it be what you imagine you want.

To the tune of hallelujah.

Haters tell me "but that's not the technology's fault, you can also use it to enhance your own writing rather than outsource everything to the machine" And this is a great lesson in User Experience Design: you CAN but you WON'T, because of how the software is designed. Let's talk about friction.

Great list of cool stuff! Try sorting by Random or New so you see the late comers.

TIL that because the FFmpeg project has gained so much experience in hand-writing assembly code to provide huge speedups, they now are putting together a series of lessons for learning assembly: Vibe coding is fun and all, but this is probably a better use of time! github.com/FFmpeg/asm-l...

It's been genuinely incredible watching an election that was guaranteed to end in a Conservative party majority according to polls a few months ago pivot to a dead heat entirely on the back of the fact that Canadian conservatives were convinced trump was their pal and didn't have a backup plan

Another GDC in the books. The best part is the people, and this year I got to bring Meghan down to meet everybody which made it extra special. Loved seeing the team again, and the AI summit and dinner were amazing as always.

Report: Poilievre bypasses traditional media with genius strategy of outright lying

If you need a GDC award winning writer and narrative designer….

I sit backstage at these gaming award shows, interviewing winners as they come through with their trophies. Nearly every game that won had people coming through, beaming with their trophy in hand. It stood out that, for Life is Strange, which won the Social Impact award, there was no one.

Perhaps the Gamers are alright

Haven't seen this reported anywhere but a judge overseeing Florida's attempt to age gate all social media pointed to the failure of D&D to make him worship Satan as a kid to suggest the state needs actual evidence, and not just vibes about a social media moral panic. www.techdirt.com/2025/03/11/j...

This position is fully remote, and junior/intermediate friendly as long as you have experience with interactive systems (storylets, barks, twine, quests, etc...) and fit the team / project vibe. I'm doing some narrative tools dev, so we would be working closely together.

Narrative folks, if you're interested in working on design for SCP-5k, I'd love to talk to you. We don't have a job posting up yet, but myself and the leadership team will be at GDC next week if you want to chat. If you're not attending feel free to reach out here anyway.

I talk about the creation of our new enemies in our latest devlog. This was my first time doing this type of voice over recording, and it was way harder than I expected. Mad props to anybody who does this kind of work on a regular basis.

For a while now I have been thinking something to the effect of, “This is the most uncool era of American history,” and I finally put those thoughts into words.

genAI NPCS are shit for many reasons but also: NPCs with one or two lines of dialog clearly communicate to the player that this character cannot help you progress. We don't just choose not to include thousands of lines for NPCs because we're lazy or lack resources. It's bad design.

No, Democrats, these little auction signs aren't it. You're acting like Wes Anderson characters who don't understand that they're in a Tarantino movie.
