So there is a whole lucrative industry devoted to figuring out the often menial lies of people who may anyway not get hired for totally different reasons, with at best the flimsy justification that there *may* be a correlation with cutting corners in the future. Stupid surveillance=still evil!

Back to blogging for the Recent Developments in Consumer Law Blog! This time, CJEU on "initial commitment period" in the Universal Services Directive and mobile companies trying to have their cake and eat it too. Intrigued? recent-ecl.blogspot.com/2025/02/init...

It's truly disgusting how Ferat Kocak of Die Linke is being put under a microscope by right wing media for being a normal letfy activist and pro-Palestine, while the AfD secured 20% of the vote with soon to be MPs who probably build models of concentration camps in their free time.

Warren Buffett's annual shareholder letter is out: "Someday, *any day*, a truly staggering insurance loss will occur – and there is no guarantee that there will be only one per annum."

The top 0.1% of Americans control $22 trillion in wealth. The bottom 50% control $3.8 trillion in wealth. Read that back. Folks, this is what oligarchy looks like.

If the new legislation passes, my colleagues in Israel and I could potentially be exposed to prison sentences not only for activism, but also potentially for run of the mill research in international law.

UK energy industry made £483bn profit since 2020. OFGEM's marginal pricing rules guarantee profits to the most inefficient/costly producer. 1 in 5 of all deaths are people in fuel poverty – including 110,000 pensioners. No curbs on profiteering. Real wages cut. WFP cut. Cost of living soaring.

Amazon's ad revenue (ie "sponsored results") hit $56.2 billion last year (about double every newspaper in the world combined). www.adweek.com/commerce/ama...

Much of EU regulatory contract law is about "transparency" and enhancing comprehensibility, in the hope that competent consumers will discipline the market by ditching providers offering bad terms. Maybe, maybe, clear contracts could help ex post - when incentives to read stronger.

When Stanford IT staff and a pro-diversity group shared a list of words they encouraged others not to use, it was national news, despite the fact it never represented campus policy. When the government erases any mention, data or research related to words, will it be treated as a free speech issue?

🚨Earlier than expected breach of Paris Agreement threshold: Unlike some media articles about this yesterday, the two Nature reports on which those headlines are based are *free to access*. Here's one (Cannon):

This is a truly crazy story - irrespective of whatever the specifics of the individual case, the reasoning beggars belief: using "class conflict" and "profit maximisation" is considered as inherently anti-democratic *because anti-capitalist*. This while the CDU works to normalise neo-nazis. Cheers!

Dutch public broadcast "explains" Trump's approach to Gaza as "businesslike", a matter of real estate development and job opportunities. The new normal sounds terrifyingly like the old, colonial-genocidal normal.

Librarians at @uvalawschool.bsky.social are right on the ball!

Although I've read about the offset-related land rush before, the scale is absolutely mind boggling to me. (from the new polycrisis newsletter, as always a great read!) www.phenomenalworld.org/analysis/pol...

Per riferimento, Jabalia-Khan Yunis è come distanza circa equivalente a Ponte Milvio-Torre Angela, solo che in mezzo ci sono le rovine di 15 mesi di guerra criminosa. www.ilpost.it/2025/01/30/h...

Education ministry in Germany (Bavaria…) does not grant climate activist their teacher license because the term profit maximization used by the activist is "related to communist ideology" seen as "irreconcilable with a liberal democratic order." 🤡

As someone who has reported on AI for 7 years and covered China tech as well, I think the biggest lesson to be drawn from DeepSeek is the huge cracks it illustrates with the current dominant paradigm of AI development. A long thread. 1/

Dutch newspaper NRC chronicles how annexation of the West Bank is happening silently through asymmetric infrastructure: roads get created for the colonizers, while roadblocks limit the mobility of the Palestinian population.

#autologica

Two not one - but that maybe shouldn’t distract us from the contents which were appalling of their own right.

a functioning opposition party that represented the working class could spike this photo in the end zone basically forever

So I have given in to curiosity and checked out the #inauguration news/pics. Is it completely not done to discuss the outfits? I am slightly obsessing about Melania's headpiece but can imagine others have more serious thoughts in mind.

Was an incredible short weekend in pre-elections Berlin, which totally crowd-out US politics anxiety because German politics feels so scary and just next door.

Scott Bessent, the new Treasury secretary, is preparing the US public for Trump's 'extravagance for capital, austerity for welfare' (Melinda Cooper) he first suggests we'd get financial instability if billionaires like him dont get tax cuts
