The US is not a safe place to conduct sporting events, host academic conferences or conduct business. Those who decide such things have an obligation to act in the safety of their members. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Universities must defend the right to protest. That’s why I wrote to @unibirmingham.bsky.social, urging them to drop disciplinary actions against students targeted for peaceful pro-Palestine activism & to review investment policies so they align with international human rights standards.

We are happy to announce that the CENTA3 Doctoral Landscape Award Bid has been successful. This will allow us to continue on the work done in CENTA1 and CENTA2 to deliver excellence in PhD training within the Environmental and Earth Sciences: #CENTA3 www.birmingham.ac.uk/news/2024/ma...

Our new paper is featured on the cover of the latest issue of Geobiology. The paper describes microbial fabrics that have previously been misinterpreted as ancient sponge fossils. Very sorry to anyone who now has to update their early animal evolution powerpoints! 🧪⚒️ doi.org/10.1111/gbi....

Still laughing hours after I read this. So true so true

New paper: “you just look at rocks, and have beards” Perceptions of Geology From the United Kingdom: A Qualitative Analysis From an Online Survey. We explore perceptions of geology from both 'Non-geologists' and 'Geologists', who describe the subject very differently! ⚒️🧪 doi.org/10.3389/esss...

“There is a cost for success in STEM academia. The few minoritized people who seem to thrive might be doing what psychologists call ‘high-effort coping’” True words by Jean King, and gosh, do I not feel it.

Today on Assigned: The bathroom bill resurgence. So far 20 separate bills restricting access for trans people to public bathrooms have been introduced in 12 US states. One of the worst, a ban in Utah may pass that state's Senate today.

F*** the taboos. Break the cycle. The field is for everyone and every body. Features interviews from me and several colleagues about both the challenges and successes of changing the culture of fieldwork in geoscience. 🧪⚒️ undark.org/2024/01/17/f...

In my latest column for Teen Vogue I wrote about the latest surge, my disappointment with the Biden administration and Democratic party & how so many high risk people have been abandoned by the state: www.teenvogue.com/story/covid-...

CENTA is giving Blue Sky a go. We're still on Twitter/X and may be a little quieter on here until it becomes more open/used by students, but feel free to follow and/or interact with this account!

Thanks for the well wishes, folks! My symptoms are a lot better now and I'm hoping that trajectory continues. Reminder to #AGU23 attendees: now that you've seen so many posts from people who got COVID there, AGU sent out a survey yesterday for feedback on the meeting. 👀

Hey look - it's my sister! On a podcast! 🤩🧪

Beyond a shadow of a doubt that England is in its biggest Covid wave for well over a year now, with latest ONS infection survey results published. An estimated 4.3% of people infected in England as of last week (6% in London!) I've written about it here christinapagel.substack.com/p/england-in...

Unless we consider a number of other factors — permanence, albedo, co-emitted GHGs, asymmetry — balancing CO₂ emissions with removals (net zero) will not achieve the intended climate goal. Conversation: theconversation.com/carbon-remov... Article (free link): rdcu.be/dsYVk

this is a bloody great name for a climate report www.unep.org/resources/em...

Very nice and informative ‘viewpoint’ on CDR: Various methods of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) are being pursued in response to the climate crisis, but they are mostly not proven at scale. In this Viewpoint, six experts offer their views on the CDR debate. www.nature.com/articles/s43...

Anne Boyer has resigned as the poetry editor of the New York Times magazine: “Because our status quo is self-expression, sometimes all artists have left is to refuse. So I refuse.”

Update: there is now an open letter to UKRI here, calling on them to reject this attack on academic freedom and political interference in the decision-making and governance of UKRI. I would invite academic colleagues to sign and share docs.google.com/document/d/e...

UK govt minister, in the last hour, ordering the national academic research funding body to censor the members of its expert panels, for unacceptable sympathy with Palestinians.

This is so real. I’ve reported on this over the years in many forms. Coral reef scientists. Conservationists caring for endlings. Public health workers in the pandemic. Journalists covering all the above. The people bearing witness are not okay.

Do you love forams? do you love lasers? do you love the PETM? Well I have a PhD project for you: noc.ac.uk/gsnocs/proje.... More details here: thefosterlab.org/blog/2023/10.... Please spread the word and pass on to anyone who you think might be interested.

One of the people who brought us some of the most informative, accurate, and compassionate reporting of the pandemic is still high quality masking…should tell folks something…

Absolute 🔥 this. 'It has been recently suggested that universities, as they currently exist, are not fit for purpose in a time of planetary emergency, and there is a desperate need to develop alternative approaches.' 'There is no research on a dead planet.' www.frontiersin.org/articles/10....

✉️ Some science 🧪 buddies and I have written an open letter to the UK government, strongly opposing their “kicking woke ideology out of science” sentiments, which stand to damage the UK’s scientific standing and ability to deliver for public good. Something climate activists who are ignoring COVID need to know: Working to reduce the harm of current pandemics, and preparing for future pandemics, is a key component of climate adaptation. Health justice isn't a distraction. The climate crisis IS a public health crisis.

If you have bsky invites and want to give them to scientists/academics, this form by @pkpd-babe.bsky.social has worked well for me. 🧪 I always request that my codes go to folks with marginalized identities and it seems like they try to honor that.

Insane flooding across NYC - streets, buses, even the LGA terminal are underwater - just one week after #ClimateWeekNYC. The science is clear: this is climate change loading the weather dice against us, making extreme rainfall more frequent and more dangerous.

Our VC promoting a Koch funded shadow organisation which has propped up abusers, bigots, racists, the people dismantling libraries and opposing critical race theory and harassing trans people. I’m sick to my stomach. I knew he was a transphobe but to be this open about it is terrifying.
